Chains that BARF likes

And if you manage to somehow misalign your chain, the aluminum sprocket will leave a bunch of aluminum flakes stuck to any grease near the front sprocket to let you know that you have a problem. :laughing

I'll never use an aluminum sprocket on a motorcycle again (yes, that's a Renthal on the bottom). JT sprockets are reasonably priced and of decent quality, and that's what I use when I need new ones.
Ever use AFAM? I have had virtual steel performance from their aluminum. And I have OEM aluminum on a Honda. There must be a lot of variations in aluminum quality. :dunno

My experience with RK is that they suck and the warranty isn't worth a shit. It's pro-rated at MSRP. I prefer Renthal or EK. Both have lasted over 10,000 miles on my SV650S even though they're a size down 520 vs stock 525.

I like any of the DID x-ring chains. I've used at least 10 of them over the years. I always use OEM size. they all last me 20k+

I never pay more than $150 for each.

I do have one 520 conversion from a 525. it has an 8lb rear wheel and alum sprocket. that one has an RK chain cause it comes in KTM orange

there def is. my Vortex sprockets wear twice as fast as Renthals on the same bike. but i get them a lot cheaper so its no big deal to me.

theres also variation from bike to bike. swingarm/chain geometry seems to affect wear. my buddy races an S1000RR and can eat a Vortex AL sprocket in half a day. Renthal and AFAM last the full day. he uses steel now. my other friends w/ ZX10Rs (comparable HP) dont have the same issue.

Good thing I haven't tracked the BMW, yet. :laughing

Some things that I know make a difference: Correct tension to allow full travel. Correct angle AT REST, so you get full travel. Wheel/ swingarm alignment. I use a caliper to measure both sides of the swingarm when setting the wheel. I do not use the marks on the swing arm.

On the side:The S1000RR has had some "mysterious" pulling issues for some. A misaligned rear tire could cause that. At race speed you might not notice the subtle problem, but your sprocket would. (Just throwing it out there.)

I use DID, but chains are pretty much, just chains. Although the 916, and Superhawk always ate them up in about 8-10K, even the 530s.

I run RK-XSO chains, usually get 20k out of them with neglect - forget to lube for a few weeks when racking up 500+ miles a week and whelp. Always steel sprockets. I usually do about 40k on steel sprockets before I replace them, usually out of guilt. Bikes are a SuperDuke 1290 and a S1000XR, so no shortage of horsepower there.

typically i like D.I.D & RK, but theres other good ones out there. if you're interested in a certain brand look up their tensiel (sp) strength & compare them to others. a good, quality chain will have over 9,000 pds tensil (sp) strength.

I have used DID VX2 chain sprocket kit. There are some discussions about what sprocket is better, but the kit was just simpler to order.

One note: the kit comes with connecting links. The description does not mention this and I ordered an additional link thinking I needed it, Chapparal of course did not bother to contact me beforehand. Now I have an extra $6 connecting link :(

I've never seen a chain not come with a master link.

My last two chain and sprocket sets have been DiD. I did notice a slight noise, on both, where the stock chains were pretty much quiet.
