now a question: what is the actual definition of "species"? My question is, how when finding a single or very few examples of a fossil creature, they determine that the being is a distinct species and not just a mutation or possibly even being a "mule"?
Back in my school days the definition we were given in Bio was that a species was a group that could produce viable offspring. So all dogs are a species, but horses and donkeys, which can produce infertile offspring, are not.
The definition seems to have changed.
