CHP forced to remove Lane Splitting Guidelines-Need your help now!

I'm not sure, but I feel like I've seen an uptick in people sharing using all sorts of tactics that I didn't used to see as much. High speed, sharing on two lane roads (riding on the shoulder). Generally feeling entitled to share however and whenever they want and using the new guidelines as the reason/excuse.

As long as you're still in the lane when you share, and you don't cross into the shoulder, you're cool IMO. I asked this same question in the other thread and there was no definitive reason against it.

It would be fun to heckle him at a seminar. Sadly, pestering him will only increase his resolve. We need to address the issue, not the man (unfortunately).

Exactly.

Except even though it is legal, it was always an officers discretion to give you a ticket for reckless driving or unsafe lane changes etc. If an officer does not like what you are doing he or she can cite you.

Even though an officer still could have cited you for the above after the guidelines were published, they still provided a baseline for what was permissible. That baseline was for motorcyclists, drivers, and even officers.

+1

I got screamed at by a CHP in the Sierras once for filtering through stopped traffic to the front of a light.

And plenty of drivers don't know that lane splitting is legal.

Along with the guidelines came a lot of publicity and education about the legality of lane splitting, and the value of that far outweighs any potential downside associated with the possibility that the guidelines might become a law. Which wouldn't be the end of the world anyway. In court I'd rather argue about specific criteria than try to debate the judgement of a LEO.

Signed. Maybe we need a sticky to bring this to every BARFer's attention and mobilize everyone?
