Hi,
Looking to buy a Jacket mainly for cold weather. I would be using this for daily commute during winter, and for touring as well.
Layers are good, as it could be taken out if the weather gets warm. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated as always.
Thanks,
Chandramouli

If $$$ is not an issue get a Aerostich Darien. I have the light model with a liner works great for summer and winter. You can also buy an electric liner if you want, I use a warm and safe as I had it already. If counting your pennies get a Bilt.

Damn...that Klim is expensive. Sorry I should have mentioned my budget, which is around 500$.I start to dig into the Darien light, but how is the protection on that? Any other brand I must consider.

Windproof shell, any warm motorcycle jacket and an electric vest. Gloves too.

I have a Frogg Toggs outer shell that is rain "proof" but more importantly cheats the wind in excellent fashion. Compresses into nearly nothing. That over a lined armored textile m/c jacket is warm enough for most days. The icing on the cake is an electric jacket with a controller switch. Should use electric gloves as well, though many here like heated grips.

And use a neck gaiter or a balaclava.

I like my Tourmaster Transition. Very warm in winter (down to freezing) and relatively cool in the summer up to about 80F with the vents open and liner removed.

I crashed in mine and pretty much destroyed it, but it protected me very well. I'm getting another.

Tourmaster with an electric vest should come in under 500$. I recommend this route as well.

It is, but now that I've owned one, I could never go back. I have the Badlands, which after my dealer's discount was around $600. Not near as cheap as the Tourmaster Transition 2 it replaced (which is a great jacket for the price, BTW), but worth every penny. Great fit, great features and it feels like it'll last forever. We'll see.

I had a high Viz Rev'IT that I used last winter and with the Bilt Baclava and Shirt it worked fine for all days. I was riding rain or shine. The gloves were the weak part of the equation so I would invest in some good ones. I picked up a better pair late last year but did not get a chance to try them in the colder months.

I personally do not like electric vests...nothing against, but just don't like to complicate things...just me.

Archimedes - Do I need to buy inner layers separately for the Badlands? Also Can I know where you got your jacket from. Anyone dealer in the bay area, so that I can try them on?

Also I have been looking at the rev-it Poseidon GTX. Any inputs on this?
Thanks.

In cold weather I think you would probably want a layer underneath. Base layer probably. It buttons up tight though and keeps the wind out when you want to. Vents great when you want it to as well.

I believe Motor Cafe in Sunnyvale has a few and I think San Jose BMW has them as well. Probably want to call ahead to see if they have your size in stock. Word of advice, don't cinch up the waist belt inside when you try on the jacket; ignore it. Makes the jacket ride up a bit. I removed it, as I understand others have done as well.

I can't believe you'd need any heated gear in Sunnyvale. If anything, maybe some heated grips, but I guess it depends on how long your commute is and how much wind protection you have.

I get cold easy and was commuting below freezing for 30 minutes with a Tourmaster Transition jacket and Tourmaster Overpant. Long underwear underneath my work clothes and heated grips with normal riding gloves.

I commute on my FZ1, it has a ZG Sport Touring windscreen that's a little taller than stock so it keeps the wind off my chest. That helps a lot. Also, if you don't want to install heated grips, you can install some Bark Busters (like they have on dirt bikes) to keep the wind off your hands.

Mark - I commute to SF on 280 2-3 times a week on average. Sometimes it gets cold, and especially winter is coming around. I also sometimes do long trips. So I think to have a dedicated cold weather jacket would be ideal.

I probably would go and check out the Klim, and update how it feels.

Btw any idea on the Rev it poseidon. I kind of really like the design.

I understand. I still think the Transition would suit your needs well. Definitely get a taller windscreen if you can.

I can speak to the overall quality of Klim and Rev-it. I have some Klim off road pants and they are stellar. I also have some Rev-it hot weather street pants, very good quality.

My Dainese Airframe was great.

The liner was warm and blocked the wind nicely; without it the jacket is comfortable well into the 90's. Decent armor. Snug fit. Looked alright off the bike too, IMHO.

It's an old school jacket, but still around for a reason.
First Gear Kiliminjaro.
3/4 length, removable liner, vents, waistband belt, waterproof, CE armor, tall sizes, big sizes, under helmet hood.
Been a best seller for over 15 years, black, silver, also available in day glo yellow if you must.

300.00 leaves you enough money for Held Freezer or BMW Pro Winter gloves too.

Got $500 to spare? Go Dainese SF they recently had a clearance sale, and probably still have some goodie left. Last week I bought a nice waterproof jacket Avro D-Dry for around $250, or if prefer a suit check out bmw coverall suit off ebay lowest starting at $500+.

I have a tourmaster transition. It's pretty warm and dry. maybe pick one up until you find THE jacket

Hi Guys...Its been a while now, and I think I owe an update to all my fellow barfers, for giving me your priceless suggestions.:thumbup
After so much thinking, I made my decision to buy the Klim Latitude Misano Jacket and pants.
My wife gave the green signal to stretch my budget :), and I was thinking of the Badlands, but again my wife said I rather buy the jacket and the pants for that money, which made sense to me.

Guys...what kind of layers do you wear for the winter...I need some kind of layer which goes over my work clothes, and under my jacket.

Thanks,
Chandramouli
