Funny - but it's not like he was competing, while "doping," with otherwise "clean" competitors.

The issue though is that he claimed over and over and over that he was doing it clean and destroyed some people's lives when they accused him of being dirty. The lie is almost forgivable since, yes, everyone else was doing it. But the ruining people who were actually telling the truth doesn't sit well with many.
