Commute to SF

Pat, my girl does that commute. Her company is in the financial district. Almost a year now....

And she is about ready to straight up murder someone.

She can do a combination of driving, Caltrain, and/or BART. None of them are great. And for the most part, it's 2 hours one way door to door.

If she drives the whole way, that's probably the fastest. But it's a lot of gas and wear on her car. Plus parking up there is like $25 a day.

Or she can drive to the Caltrain right here in Santa Clara which is maybe a mile from the house. $5 to park for the day. Go all the way to SF there's a lot of stops. Drive to Diridon in San Jose which is more like 5 miles away, and park to catch the bullet Caltrain...train is faster but is a lot more crowded. Then she has to walk several blocks from the Caltrain to her office.

Or drive to Milbrae BART and park. Then BART all the way practically in front of her building.

Or all three. Drive to Caltrain. Then transfer to BART in Milbrae.

No matter what...it sucks. Caltrain is filled with some rude rude assholes. Be glad you're a decent sized guy Pat. My girl is small and at a major disadvantage there. And BART is even worse...because the riders are just a little bit scummier.

She took the job because the money was fantastic and thought she could handle the commute. Now? She's willing to take a paycut to work closer to home. Just not worth it.

I have done long commutes before and well, I am just not willing to give up that much of my life for getting to work and back. I'd move if finding work closer was that difficult.

OP if you end up on Caltrain try seeing if your employer will count that commute time as part of your work hours. They have wifif and you could maybe have an arrangement where you are only in the office for 6 hours or something. Perhaps you could even get work from home days for part of the week.

If I absolutely had to do it, and I couldn't work out a deal as I just explained, I'd probably ride.

Huh... SF->SJ commutes don't seem that bad to me. Different clientele going to work in the city versus leaving from the city?

Rob,

Does your lady know you have M4M feelings for me? At 6'1 200+ I am decent size. The money is a nice step up, and the title and the company. But I am just not excited about the job. I am in the driver's seat though cause I already have a full time job and don't really need another one. From door to door it is 61.1 miles one way. That is an extra 31k miles on my car, based upon a 2080 hour work year. I lease that car with a 12k per year limit without getting dinged. Regardless I am still going to interview cause I haven't had one in 8 years or so, at least I can brush up on them.

I also haven't been on two wheels in a while and I see how many morons drive on the roads in my cage, can't imagine it being better on two wheels.

Reading all the stuff about parking makes me debate this even more. The company will subsidize parking but it is still $10 and at 260 days worked, that is $2,600. That takes out a fair chunk in a raise right there. Plus the Veloster is not great on gas, especially in stop and go.

Thanks for all the input. I guess I won't smite you all now.

I don't know about SJ-->SF.

However, I recently started taking an afternoon class at Mission College by Levi's and it took me 1.5hrs to get from there to South San Jose via 101-->87 when I left at 5pm.

I can't even imagine a commute from SF at that time.

I commuted from San Jose to SF for two years. By car it's a soul crushing commute and for the love of god do NOT take 101 EVER. I always had a place to park so that was never an issue but you're gonna have to figure that out.

I was coming from the Evergreen Area and it took me over an hour to get out of San Jose and then I could bomb up 280 to make up some time but it was usually 1.5-2 hours in the morning and 2hrs+ coming home. By bike it's not bad because you can usually take advantage of the carpool lane once it opens up on 280N to get through the worst of it. On the way back once out of SF it's smooth sailing until Page Mill Rd and then you'll crawl the rest of the way home.

Phew,,.....I am happily riding in a 'public' bus right now and then taking the abovementioned trans-varts. Makes my day brighter after the announcement that I'll be pay ing for a cat converter replacement...

And she is only 5'3" which makes the assholes to elbows ride and stampede to get out of the train or BART. Being your size, or even better, my size would make that aspect a bit easier.

Dork.

++++++++on 280 over 101:mad i fucking hate 101 for commuting!

Dear God,
I'm not sure if your supposed "son" keeps in touch with you but if he does-can you please inform him that when I send a BARF Happy Birthday message on December 25th of every year, I am not trying to get any special favors.

Thanks God.

and um, keep up the good work!

I will jump right on that.

Update for anyone that cares. I turned the job down at Twitter. One was the commute and two, I don't particularly care for social media. I have also never tweeted. Thanks for all the input and comments.
