Cost of Ownership of Ducati Sportbike

Could anybody give me specific numbers on the actual/predicted cost of ownership of a Ducati sportbike (e.g. 848, 1098, 1198) for the first 3 years or 20,000 miles? My primary concern is service and maintenance. I was thinking of picking up a new 1198 but I'd like to budget it out and I'm not inclined to believe the optimistic numbers I get from the dealership about service intervals and cost. I've searched the forums but came up empty; if you know of a thread that deals with this (again, with specific costs) or have firsthand info, that'd be really helpful. Thanks in advance.

Ducati 1098...Here are the DNA mandated shop charges inclusive of labor, but not including taxes

600 mile service - $144.38
7500 mile service - $ 256.88
15000 mile service - $ 362.20
After 7500 mile Valve service ("Service A") - $ 294.80
After 15000 mile Valve service ("Service B") - $366.30

The $144.38 is basically an oil change. Would I suggest only changing your oil every 7500 miles? No, so add another $150 at 3,500 miles and 11,000 miles if dealer only service is the route you want to go.

Considering how little most 1098 owners actually ride their bikes, that's nothing. :thumbup
 
My 24k (including a new headlight and front sprocket) costed me $700+ :wtf and I went to the "cheap" place in SF. This was for a 900ss. I'll scan the bill later tonight for a break down of costs.

And that was without them touching oil or spark plugs.

Those 1098 service prices are EXTREMELY low...no shop( in this area at least) will charge that little...the valve service alone is a good 3-4 hour job and with most shops being a good $100/hour you do the math. The shop i work at charges $920 for the 7500 mile service on all 4-valve ducatis and that's out the door price (parts,labor, tax). The 15k service is a bit more cause the belts get changed which adds parts costs.
 
The only thing a Ducati costs more in maintenance is the replacement of timing belts, and the complexity of checking valves on a Desmo drive train.

thats assuming it NEEDS adjusting. I know many owners who have taken in there 1098's and not needed a thing, everything was in specs. But assuming you want to be proactive, change belts, needs adjusting etc, the 7500 service can get costly as mentioned above.
As far as first service, I went ahead and had dealer do the 600 mile service, just because. It was about $190. I then plan on changing my own oil a few times in between the 7500 mile service. Otherwise the bike is your basic bike, just like any other. It will need tires, brakes, chain and sprockets, depending on how you ride. Buy the extended warranty and you dont have alot to worry about. If your ready to spend a bit more on the bike itself over a Jap bike, then a little extra service cost isnt a big deal.

that is totally unrealistic... even with a 2 valve Duc it will cost you double that

fortunately if you have a Multistrada it is SO worth it
 
Nicolas is a great shop but they aren't a authorized ducati service and they can afford to have cheaper labor rates cause they're not a dealership and don't have the overhead that most dealerships do. I'm sure their techs know what they're doing but i doubt they're ducati authorized/certified techs....
 
Well, the regular service and maintenance seems pretty much on par with other high end sportbikes, maybe a measureable percentage more, but if you drop the bike off its stand onto it's side, I would think you've pretty much just totalled the bike :laughing

Sure about that? My 2 valve didn't cost double those prices.

Maybe they're not. But Nichols's reputation precedes them.

Most mechanics don't operate on the basis of "oh doesn't need adjusting", do they? Especially dealers do not. If you leave the bike, they do (or check) everything and give you a block price.

If the above is not true, please specify shops in SF SJ and LA that do not give you a block price for "assuming it NEEDS adjusting"
 
Go around to a few "authorized" dealers and get some quotes in writing...

... and then post your notes so the rest of us that can only afford to browse Barf will have some idea :laughing
