Crazy Chinese EV cars coming to Canada

Those roving gangs of pre/teeners, we have now, are THE potential
swapping power packs, motors, controllers,
in the new E - Modes of Transport,
As the new is rapidly, outpaced,
The Future of,
Mixing what works, and a bit O' rewiring/programming.

E- Hot Rodders

I expect there will be some disappointment in Canada. It is one of the coldest countries on earth. EV's suffer significant downgrades in extreme cold. It is typical to expect a range loss of 30% and a longer charging time. The ease of access to AWD from electrical will be a boon to them in icy conditions. The HP should not be an issue with modern traction control systems in theses fully drive by wire systems, although the weight of electric cars may create some issues.

I once saw a National Geographic episode about Canada and seems very few inhabitants actually live in igloos at the North Pole. The majority live in climates similar to NY, Colorado, or Minnesota, and around 10% almost never seeing snow.
It showed that folks in colder areas are too busy sustaining themselves throughout winter on whale blubber and Tim bits to be taking 24 hour road trips. They’re mostly just doing 1/2 hour commutes to work like the rest of the world. For that an electric car will probably work just fine. Plus they have YouTube so they know how batteries work. They’ll be okay with their Chinese cars.

I just returned from a trip to China a few weeks ago. The EV adoption rate is very high, over 50% in warmer southern cities, but still nearing 50% in the colder cities of northern China like Beijing, which have a similar climate to many Canadian cities. Obviously the batteries won't perform as well in the colder climates, but they're still good enough for close to ~50% of drivers. I suspect the Canadians will be fine.

I stepped into a couple of domestic EV showrooms there and was quite impressed by the fit and finish of the cars. I was especially impressed by the brand Nio, which uses swappable batteries on all their models and operates a network of battery swapping stations across the country. They also recently came out with a solid-state 150 kWh battery that's good for over 600 miles of range. I'd love to get my hands on a Nio ET5T if we ever get rid of these dumb EV tariffs here in the states.

These will be the next 2 "killer features' for EVs in the US.

Are these the ones who can swap batteries for full packs in like 5 mins?

Well the Chinese car market must be quite different than the one here. It's curious why none of the US companies seem to be on the, or even a similar, page as what was shown in that video.

Granted, those are pretty high end luxury cars (cheap is USD over there, but they would be not here).

But just tech-wise.

I saw a quote from the Ford CEO that they canceled the Lightning so they could focus on a new truck in light of what he's seen on the Chinese side.

I saw this today and apparently it is a Chinese truck

Who in the US would be willing to spend the money building the necessary robotic swapping stations? Probably only Tesla I'm guessing? Unfortunately.
And Elon would probably badger Trump into giving him subsidies to help do it.
And he'll do it, despite his whole "socialism is cancer" schtick :laughing

There are already dealerships all over the place that could add that service.

Gas stations probably not. I could see smog stations or even rest stops implementing it.

Hell, advance the technology enough and it could be automated, like a drive through car wash or a vending machine.

I wouldn't want to swap propane tanks, empty for full, as they do everywhere.
Get stuck refilling a bad tank, would be easy, on a camping trip.
Swapping questionable batteries, creating "road flares" would be too easy.

I wouldn't want to fill up with bad gas, either, but that's a risk we all take today.

Swapping batteries sounds convenient but charging times are getting to a point where it’s becoming unnecessary.

Also assumes manufacturers are willing to cooperate with a standard battery platform and design cars around battery swap-ability

As a side light here’s a vid explaining the rise and fall of the Ford F150 Lightning.
Millions spent, high expectations, then a total collapse after just 2 1/2 years.

I would not want to swap batteries, all electric batteries are at different levels after usage, so you wouldn't want to swap your new battery for one that is years old.

Well, I think the model here is more you just keep swapping them out as a service, you don't own it.
