Dash Cams

How is this done? I have horrible visions of tearing the interior of the car apart and it not going back together (or, worse, it's now a squeaky, misfitting, half the "snap" connectors have broken mess).

Most of the time you can sneak the wire in under the pillar moulding without removing same. Just pry a small section up enough to fit the wire, stuff it in, repeat. If you do have to pop up a piece to cross the pillar, pry gently along until you can tell where the snap is (assuming you can't see a screw cover), then pop it out. Easy.

There's all kinds of youtube videos on these and the results of those caught on them. My analyses is: worth it.

Check out r/idiotsincars. Outside of reposts, a majority of the original content is from people where the other party was at fault, and claimed otherwise. Most of those are resolved with the video. Get one.

I love the vids where the OP turns out to be the douchebag and then gets huffy trying to defend their shitty driving. :rofl

Hardwire. My ocd precludes me from running any extraneous wires in my car...

:fistbump

This is a pretty good "shootout" between a few popular models. The narrator visits some pretty interesting technical differences.

Personally, I think the Viofo looks like the best bang for your buck out of these.

On your Innov K2 the GPS can mark your location in an accident but it also notes your speed. Do you think one offsets the other?

I like the idea of using a moto system in a car. Nice, small cameras, with no big "lump" on the windshield.

There's more to that lambo story, the mouthy chick was making a left and he super rudely cut around her and nearly hit a pedestrian (or bicyclist, I forget.)
He also might have slightly rubbed her car. Then in the Tiktok video, she came up behind and nailed him. These two idiots are a match made in heaven.

This is a bit non sequitur, but if someone is driving around on the street with a car worth > 100k, the owner of that showboat should be responsible for all damages that exceed 100k, regardless of fault.

Car designs disappear up top of the windshield behind the rear view mirror and lump of OEM sensor stuff. A moto type would have to be plopped on the dash to get a good field of view.

The U1000 is the size of a pack of cigs and nobody notices unless I point them out. I haven't needed it but I did see an accident. Dashcams should be mandatory for insurance and subsidized. But...I have a feeling all the loudest complainers about unlicensed/illegal drivers would cry foul about the privacy and freedom they dream about having, despite all evidence to the contrary.

As someone said in this thread about GPS...I got the same argument from a friend with a fresh teen driver, concerned about recording his misdeeds.

Interesting thought. I used to drive a 1959 Kombi and carried the minimum required insurance. I mean, it barely went over 55mph. When I moved to Marin and saw all the flash cars, I doubled my insurance numbers.

I bet you did this right after you met that strange lady who made you nervous, even though she took you in a made you breakfast...

That's a good point. I was gifted one that was mounted with a suction cup and hung down like a GoPro. That sucked and turned me off on dashcams. But the wedge type ones that are stuck on with double sided tape seem to be a lot better.

I use an older Blackvue 2CH 4k dashcam that has a front and rear camera. I rarely upload anything from it but it's there as an insurance policy. Everyone should have one imho.

A common thread on reddit is people getting into a crash and the other driver lying about what happened right up until the owner of the dashcam points out they have a dashcam.

For bonus points you shouldn't say anything and wait til they've lied to the police and then only tell the police about the camera.

Can’t say that I agree with this. So let’s say I wasn’t even driving, and my $100k+ car was parked on the side of the road (posing in front of Starbucks of course) and some knob sideswiped it hard enough to total it. I should be on the hook to cover the overage? Sounds a little Robin Hoodish to me.

Welp. This is exactly why I carry uninsured/underinsured motorist on my policy. Just about everyone driving around doesn’t have enough coverage to pay for totaling a fully loaded Tesla or whatever. Hell they don’t have enough to cover a loaded Camry.
