delta dental - what's the catch?

The catch? Cheap out on coverage, get way less in return. Dental insurance has not evolved much. All my dentist friends and their office managers have said to put your premiums in savings for routine care. None would touch Delta Dental due to the burden of paperwork and denials of care. There are many affordable care clinics around which would be happy to yank all the teeth for a small price. I like the Mex route for restorative work and have referred to Peru for great care too. A nice vacay and way cheaper than treatment here.

I would never go to a third world country for dental care. Not ever.

And having all your teeth pulled is the absolute worst thing you can do. Anyone who recommends doing that is completely stupid. You might as well amputate both arms.

:laughing

TIL having dentures is exactly like having two prosthetic arms.

Yep. Nearly worthless. And they get worse with age as the bones that used to hold your teeth will continue to shrink because they no longer are stimulated by your teeth which are no longer there.

Ever see anyone with their chin close to their nose? That’s because they had all their teeth pulled.

Your teeth are important for stimulating your bones. Without that stimulation, your bones gradually shrink and you appear much older.

I have used Delta, no issues, the dentists knew what was up and would push to get me in for anything covered so we could ensure I used up my yearly coverage. Some of that felt shady and dental work was still kinda spendy, but probably way cheaper than without coverage.

Cry about missing teeth all you want but to imply having no teeth is the same as missing both arms is fucking idiotic
With all due respect, of course.

There is way more involved in good dental health then haveing good teeth. I've suffered from periodontal disease for decades. It's in my genes. All of my care providers have remarked that I have amazingly good teeth but my gums are shit. I've had 2 cavites my whole life but I have over $20k invested in periodontist's kids college funds.
I've considered going to Mexico for treatments but periodontal disease requires multiple treatments and follow ups, otherwise I would have no qualms about it.

I've had Delta dental for decades. I pay around $100 a year and I get checkups and teeth cleaning for $25. I've had fillings, crowns and root canals all covered anywhere from 40 t0 60%. It's been just fine and has saved me thousands of dollars over the years. It's way better than paying out of pocket for everything. I've never had one problem with it.

PPO or HMO? There is a difference.

Since I was not savvy enough last post to find the tongue in cheek emoji, now
I’ll settle for :laughing. In no way do I propose folks should take the ‘yank ‘em all out!’ approach to dental health. Despite brushing and flossing after every meal plus quarterly cleanings, I’ve been told that if the calculus called tartar were a commodity, then I could make a living selling it.

However, Murica has lost whatever hegemony it may have had in the practice of medicine. The AMA reports that over 25% of doctors practicing in America are immigrant. A rise of nearly 18% since 2010. I know many and they receive excellent (often free) training at home but can make so much more money here…. The folks here who have the propensity for doctoring find the obstacles of $200K in un-forgiveable debt plus so many years training with minimal income to be insurmountable.

FWIW If someone paid my Delta Dental, I’d use it.

If I had to choose, I’d keep my arms and ditch my teeth, of course. But not having teeth can literally make your life miserable. Dentures only replace a small portion of your chewing ability and it goes downhill from there. Not only are they vastly inferior to your natural teeth, you have to use glue to keep them in your mouth. And since your maxillar and mandibular arches will constantly shrink, you need to constantly have your dentures relined. And did I mention the smell if you aren’t extremely vigilant in cleaning them. I remember a set of dentures I brought into the dental laboratory that cleared out the lab for half a day. You’d have thought I brought in a rotting corpse.

I mention all this because there is a sizable portion of the population that thinks “If I lose my teeth, I’ll just get dentures.” Not realizing all that they will give up.

Saving all your teeth for your entire lifetime is very doable and worth every penny you spend. Only in rare cases do teeth need to be pulled.

I was wondering about my implants, I did take a look^^ at your web site, and found the next paragraph explained what I'm experiencing.
Implants do test/stress the jawbone, no collapse.

Yep. Implants work similarly to natural teeth. You should be good to go.
