A little disorientated after a dead battery caused some anxiety today, I took off with my disc brake lock still locked. Normally I would bitch about how useless the lock is but this time I'm glad that a 5mph roll snapped the pin right out of it.

Perhaps some people just aren't made for disc locks, this is the second time I have tried to leave w/o unlocking.

Do you use the orange cable or some other form of reminder?

good thing u buy cheap disc locks.

might be a good idea to check your rotor(s) for straightness.

I goofed up and did this lastweek except I keeled over lol. I got into talking to my neighbor and forgot to remove it. *doh

Besides using a cable to attach to your bars as a reminder, always lock it to the rotor right behind the fork or caliper, whichever is hindmost. that way, if you do take off with it still locked on, you won't get far and less damage will be done. Although you probably will fall over. Ask me how I know.

In fact, I'd wager that nearly everyone who has ever used a disk lock has done it at least once.

Ive never done it

I hope I don't do that. My xena lock will scream if I stand the bike off the kickstand though!

Yeah when I used to use one I had a zena and just barely move the bike and she screams to remind you or the thief, I also used the orange cable thingy to the throttle and never had an incident.

Bad karma to rise to the bait, but I've never had an incident either. I have a neon yellow cable that is a very effective reminder. There is no way I'd use one without the cable though.... That said, most thieves use the pick up and throw into van method, don't they, so I always wonder if this ritual serves any purpose.

Nope; I've always used the orange cable. :x

Nope. In 7 years using a disc lock, that's never happened to me... :|

DITTO ^^^^^^^

Especially if you've done it twice now. Just raise the front end & spin the tire & see if the rotor is "wobbly" (too much "runout"), & that should tell you if you need to have it seriously checked w/a "runout-guage."

It's really easy to tweak a rotor, even easier to tweak the aluminum rotor "carrier" (the part that hooks rotor to hub.) Those things bend if you look at them wrong...

Todays EBD tip: next time your getting a tire changed, don't put your tire into the trunk laying on the rotor. This will bend it first time you hit a big bump in the car. Instead put it either between the seats with thick towel over each rotor, or put a couple old tires in the trunk so you can lay it on there w/o the rotor touching the floor of trunk. (It's sitting on the wheel/tires instead.) Saves rotors/carriers....

FWIW, IMHO,

+1. i always do that and have almost taken off with the disc lock on several times. i say almost because the bike barely moves an inch before the lock hits the caliper and it's not big deal.

if you put the lock further forward on the rotor, you end up like the guy i saw on a big HD trying to take off with his lock on. i was about to tell him his lock was on, but it was too late. he gunned the engine, the bike lurched forward about a foot, stopped suddenly and toppled over. i went to help him get the bike back up. rotor was bent, caliper was also fubared, it looked like the fork tube might even have gotten damaged. i left the guy alone 'cuz it didn't seem like he was stoked at people seeing him eff up his Harley, but... knowing how expensive HD parts and service are, i wouldn't be surprised if he did over $1000 in damage.
