DMV guidance....Statement of Facts

How about this novel idea: The truth...

I don't understand why you keep asking the forum community what to write when we have no idea how and what the circumstances are behind your "acquisition" of this motorcycle are. Only you know and only you can be held accountable.

You are correct in identifying the importance of this form; not only because it affects the outcome but more so because you are providing facts.

The form is called "Statement of Facts" for a reason and you sign it, under PENALTY OF PERJURY for a reason.

Not to be snippy or dmv nazi or Dudley do-right etc. but c'mon, man; instead of making things complicated, state the facts. What's the harm in doing so?

Sorry if my version of "guidance" isn't what you're hoping for; but you've put it here in teh BARFs and I felt compelled to post.

I appreciate your opinion and thanks for the post. I've written the truth on my SOF...I'm too old for anything else. I ask about the SOF verbiage because I've heard that if not properly written that it could play a role in the length of time to complete the process and the final verdict. I care about this bike and preserving it for years to come.

Fair enough; I'm clear now why you've asked. Good luck with the process and hope it's shorter vs longer.

Post pics of said moto for posterity...when all is said and done

I definitely post pictures when it's complete. Thanks.

For the easier one i stated when i bought it, that i transferred it at that time but lost title and any paperwork years ago as the bike was a basket case in my ga rage now i was putting it together again.
The other one was the same deal except sacramento kicked it back and wanted more info:
They want to know who i aquired it from ( I didn't remember), where it was aquired from (city, state), when the bike entered the state for the first time (I didn't know), if i tried contacting the previous owner (if you never transferred it), what happened to the paperwork, where the vehicle has been stored and a statement that it has not been operated or stored on public roads.
I really couldn't provide any more useful.information than I did the first time but I got the plate and title on the second send mailing. Maybe I got lucky and different clerk passed it through. Dunno.

Makes sense to me...this is great information. Cheers.

I have an appointment with the CHP on Tuesday.. I do see an issue that I don't know how to resolve..it is missing the federal sticker that is on all bikes...on the steering head. Maybe I can get some help sorting that out with them.

Older bikes don't have a fed sticker. This stumped the dmv clerk who punted that bike to chp for verification. Chp did not bat an eyelash and approved it.

I'm pretty sure that my 78 SR500 would have one...my other 2 SR500's have them. However your comment about CHP is something I'm hoping for this week. I surely won't volunteer that it's missing. Thanks!:thumbup

does it have a license plate? I could see that complicating things (no personal experience, just wondering).

I have very little experience too with this stuff... I have no registration, no pink, no bill of sale, no plate.. no federal sticker.. I have nothing so I fully expect it to be a learning experience that I will not want to repeat!

On a positive side; I had a police officer friend run the VIN to see if it appeared as stolen or something else and nothing popped up. My most recent visit to DMV, I asked the clerk to check the DMV data base to see if there was something as well...she said that the VIN I gave her is no longer in the DMV system... Things are complicated enough..loads of forms!

Wish me luck!

Yeah, fed stickers started around 1968 or so I think. Shouldn't be a problem for chp.

So how about some details what kind of bike and how did you come by it ?

1978 SR500... 129miles..original Everything..tires, tool box, even has the warranty paint on the masterlink... the VIN is very unusual.. I contacted Yamaha USA and they said it may have been a pre-production or demo bike given to dealerships prior to the model release or used for magazine test rides and review, etc....probably should have been returned by the dealer....I have an idea what dealership may have had the original possession of this bike and I will check with them at some point. I am still hunting down the history on this one, but right now my focus is registering it.

I got it a long time ago, it's been sitting in my house under cover. Here is one picture..I'll share more later.

These two websites that are helpful with vehicles of unknown history....

Check here for CA DMV back fees. It will also let you know if out of the system or not. Use the "used vehicle" calculator.

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/portal/feecalculatorweb

In your case the second website is likely not needed, but other folks in similar situation may find it helpful. NICB website will let you know if a vehicle has ever been reported stolen or total loss by an insurance company (anywhere in North America)

https://www.nicb.org/theft_and_fraud_awareness/vincheck

As to the SOF, often the DMV clerks will *suggest* what you should write.

Can't wait to see more pictures:thumbup

Nice scoot. I assume you will modify it thusly:

I do not plan to butcher a New 1978 original SR500..I will leave it as it left the factory. However I have a Project SR500 that is half way done.....

here is a picture of how my 1978 SR500 looks today..

I went to CHP for the Vehicle Varification.....they pulled out DMV form REG 31...and signed off on the VIN number, and made no mention of the federal label or an emission label..checked their database to see if it is stolen....then handed me the paper with all the proper signature....Next up DMV for the registration piece. This is likely to be more difficult.
