For years I've checked my mirrors while lane sharing to let faster riders pass, but on my new bike I have to fold the mirrors in (their height and length are the same height as truck/suv mirrors).

Folding in the mirrors has been fine this winter when there aren't as many other motos about, but I'm wondering what I can do differently when Spring/Summer roll around and there are potentially other riders splitting much faster than I.

If it's like my FZ-1 I just fold in the left mirror. It gives me enough clearance to get through those tighter spaces but I can still see behind me. I tend to favor the right mirror anyway. :thumbup
 
As much as I can. But remember, when you're splitting, it takes more of your attention than usual so less is in reserve for checks behind. But if I get a second, I'll do it and if someone wants to split in front of me, they're welcome to it. Actually, if the rider is good, I prefer splitting behind someone (far enough behind, of course) because they're sort of an advance warning system to the drivers out there that bikes are coming up from behind. (Not a reason to lower your guard, though.) Also, if I'm splitting at a good pace, I'm less inclined to be concerned about other riders behind me because if they want to go even faster, they're probably nutz. But I still check my 6 and will move over if someone's back there. I just less inclined to be checking back there.

Yep, this. It's the nice thing to do.

There is a thread in the 'sink about parking it in the fast lane and making people go around. Plugging up the road for guy who wants to split faster than you is just as big of a douche move.
 
If I'm splitting and I notice a guy behind me (and it's not like I'm going to stare at my mirror while sneaking through traffic) I wait until there's a nice clear space for me to pull into before letting him by.

He might have to wait a minute. QQ if that's the case.

No that's not what I mean, I'm talking about going about 3 min+ behind a guy who has opportunities to look back but never does. Then a couple times I saw his mirror but he still didn't actually look back I think he was just adjusting something so he moved his arm...

Yeah, basically the short form for telling someone to "cry more."

Wasn't saying it in your case, but there are people who believe the world has to yield to them upon demand.
 
Humm, Not sure just why, but..I only came up on One biker (a BMW rider) it took a little while for a space to get around him to come up. No big deal though, splitting is just dealing with what has to be dealt with.

I only had one bike come up on me , A CHP, fortunately there was a space about four cars up that I could squeeze into, to let him by.

I split as fast as I safely can. Having gobs of off road racing and trail riding background, is extremely beneficial (I think).


To answer the question...Well before dropping into the split, of course 100%. Then, first things first, what is ahead, both in vehicles and spaces vehicles can change lanes into, and reading the mirrors to see what the drivers are up to, and the wheels to clues that are missed in the mirrors. When all is well, ahead, then a 6 check.

YES! Gotta get out of the way for Kamikaze lane splitters. Just like in the car I move over for speeders. I always get behind Harleys who never do. :( Unless its HA's who normally haul ass.
 
I split lanes as fast as the space between the cars allows for my comfort level. If there's someone behind me who doesn't like that, they can kick rocks. I usually split at like 20-25 though so maybe this thread doesn't apply to me lol

Allow me to respectfully and politely suggest you move your ignorant and self-absorbed ass over so that others may move through without having to pander to your obvious need to feel better about yourself and your abilities.

If you are holding up traffic and truly have the attitude you expressed in your post, then yes does apply to you.
 
20-25 is F'N slow for lane sharing on 580 through Pleasanton/Livermore. If someone was doing that speed in front of me, I'd be seriously pissed off.
