Do you really need that liter bike?

You are not a complete rider if you can't ride the little bikes and the big bikes. I love my little Ninja 250 but it is a slow little turd. Fun but slow. My ZRX1200 is also slow compared to a front line liter bike. So yeah, I need a liter bike but I'm realistic so I'm getting a CB1000R, it's only a 999, that should be slow enough to keep me out of trouble...(insert evil laugh).

I never said stupid, she would kick my ass! I tried my best to use 250 logic and not the taser threat :laughing I think the problem is 75% peer pressure. Some people can't take the 250 jokes. In the end yes its riders choice. I'm just trying to show good reasons to stay with the 250.

A few of the things I have learned in the 35 years I've been riding:

1. It is way more fun to go fast on a slow bike than it is to go slow on a fast bike.

But it's even more fun to go fast on a fast bike. :dunno

:dunno I don't think I've ever been slighted or made the subject of a joke because I showed up at a ride on a 250... does that actually happen?

I mean, it's not like it's a Buell or anything...

Started on a 250 cub in 66, was to small then, currently 230 lbs and 6'2" so I really need a big bike to haul me and my crap around, thou I still have a place in my heart for a SR 500 just fun current bikes Cagiva 900,Ktm 990 ADV and ZRX 1200

I started on a 450 Rebel then onto a 650 Hawk and currently on a 996 Super Hawk.
I love my current v twin liter bike. I've never been on the track just riding the streets for commute and for the joy of it all.
The bike is heavy and not as easy to flip around town but I prefer the size.
Why not suggest that your friend get on one and take it out for a spin, see what he thinks of it....?

Beyond the 250cc, it's not about need, it's about want. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. He or she is not stupid for wanting whatever he/she wants. He or she is not you and is free to be. To each their own.

I commute every day on a bike. For that reason, I prefer the liter bike, that is the bike is not 'wrung out' at freeway speed... about 4K-5K RPM at freeway speed. The part I like is the instant power available if I ever need to get out of a tricky spot before it becomes worse.

You don't have to go fast to have fun and that still applies on a liter bike. The bike is nimble enough that I have have plenty of fun in the twisties as well. Maybe it's not as fun as you would think I might have on a smaller bike, but fun is subjective.

If that's what your friend wants, you can give your opinions, plus and minus, logically, financially, etc. In the end, if your friend can afford it and it's what your friend wants, so be it.

btw i remember when i was riding 250 - one thing that was always troublesome is passing cars on 2 line highway. It just does not give that amount of power that quickly to make safe and quick pass.
Also mine CBR250R was not good for freeways for pretty much same reason. Practically its power tops out is 75 mph. which is the average car's speed on CA freeways. Of course it could run a bit faster 80, 85..., but it take very long time/distance to accelerate, fighting with a wind drag.
Commuting on 250 - no way, while riding in the hills with no cars - works very well.

I commute around 90 miles a day on my 250 and don't have problems with the freeways at all (and am usually going around 75-85). Am I at the top of the range? Oh yeah! LOL! But it scoots along just fine... But on the flip side, I do definitely keep thinking about getting a 650 to handle the commuting duties a bit better...

I do agree on passing though! I take Hwy 4 (east of Brentwood) and Hwy 12 a lot, which are mostly 2 lane roads, and usually have to pass someone at one time or another... Basically, I have to keep watch of openings and time it just right. it's doable, but definitely isn't the quickest, that's for sure! LOL!

How did this thread go 49 posts before someone asked the most relevant and important question? Your friend: is she hot?

BARF, I am disappoint. :x

There's a severe lack of quality bike choices available new in this country between 300cc and 600cc. Used to be you could pick up a bunch in that range. :thumbdown

who has the quote

"a ninja 250 is all the bike you'll ever need bro"

or something like that

I just spent 3 weeks and several thousand kilometers on fast roads on a VFR800. It's not quite a literbike, but it was absolutely phenomenal, and I don't think I could have made the same trip as comfortably on a 250/500/600.

I didnt read every page but I had a 600 that was ok but upgraded to a newer 600 for power and finally upgraded again to a liter bike, why? because im a fat riding a bike and now when i ride two up its all i need. Now if the question is what I have the most fun on I would have to tell you my Honda Ruckus smiles all day when I ride that when I get all days smiles on the liter bike is when im at a trackday

+1 to those who advocate diversity. This is a hobby for most of us, so folks should dabble and experience many bikes of different sizes and styles, limited only by curiosity, budget and time.

There are a lot of middleweight standards/"ADVs" in the 500-700cc range that are great streetbikes.
