I have a 2004 SV650S and it has the pass light. I haven't used it as I usually forget it is there.

Do you guys use the pass light or flick your high beams to signal that you are going to pass someone that you are following? Are there any other situations that the pass light should be used?

Thanks in advanced!:thumbup

Pretty sure that's illegal in california. My canadian buddy got a ticket for it.

use the pass switch in Europe: drivers yield to you

use the same switch in the US: drivers will give you the bird or brake check ya

one thing's for sure, never use it when you approach a driver about to turn in front of you or pull into traffic, they might interpret it as 'go ahead and proceed'.....

my bike doesn't have one but it would seem pretty sketchy to use it. car drivers will think you're fucking with them.

Interesting. I was just wondering why that it is offered on the bike. I do know drivers here in the US would not take kindly to being flashed high beams (even during the day) and then a motorcycle goes around them aggressively. I guess I'll just keep forgetting about the button.
I wonder why they call it a pass button if we shouldn't use it. I don't flash high beams in a car when I go around people.

Pass light doesn't work when high beams are on... Or at least didnt on my 04 GSX-R. So, didn't get into a habit of using it.

Lol. I didn't think of that. I ride with the high beams on during the day already...

Seriously... why is that thing on the bike in the first place?

Like many things, flashing headlights mean different things in Europe and the US:

In Europe flashing lights = "I would like to pass you now, please yield"
In the US flashing lights = "I see you want to pass now, go ahead"

flash to pass probably will not help your cause...

the autobahn?

Though not explicitly forbidden if done from a save (!) distance it will surely not be perceived as a friendly/normal request to yield. However it will be a good recipe to see some road rage (brake checking etc.) happening.

Using your left indicator while keeping your distance will much more likely get the message across on the autobahn.

Yup.

Technically you are allowed to flash your headlights to warn somebody under certain circumstances. E.g. if you intend to pass a complicated farming vehicle. Flashing the headlight, at least in most countries in Europe, has the exact same meaning as using your horn.

Having said that, how would you react if somebody riding behind you started honking?

There is a very fine line between feeling "warned" or "given a heads up" and feeling pressured or even assaulted.

Flashing just before you attempt a pass will likely get you run off the road. Don't do it here, it's not like in Europe as TinyTim said. Doing it here enables road rage of frustrated drivers, gives them a reason to try to kill you.

If I come up on a slow moving cage on a twisty, I just wait for the right spot to safely pass w/no warning at all. Better for all...

ESPECIALLY IF IT'S DOUBLE-YELLOWED....for you Rel....:laughing

I use it all the time when passing. :dunno

Agree with those who say do not use it with left turners, et al.

Odd you place this here today. Last night at 5:10 pm, I was merging onto 101 from Great Amerka. Most cagers are polite, see ya coming as the blinkers are on and your splitting safely into the diamond. So I get to the diamond, blinker off as I see a little red ford merging about 3 cars ahead of me heading to the diamond.

So I adjust, slow down as I know they see me and I flash me beams to signal ok move in (Trucker OK Signal your clear)

What does these little F***kers do, they straddle the lane blocking me between two cars and they are flipping me off. Closer exam tells me these free loving hippies in da obama peta stickered coexist love mobile youngsters are well clueless. The Cage next to my right gives birth as I glanced and he gave me a wave to enter his lane as I did.

Its times like these I wish I had me a paintball gun, as the windows were open and these breedin little parasites needed toget an ass kicking. I shook me noodle gave em a barf salute and tally hoo got me boggie on.

Moral of the story?

Well there is not, just some dumb fu**ers dont know shit for driving etiquette

This * 1,000

Use it here, legal or not, and you're just asking for obnoxious behavior from the vehicle you're trying to pass.

Funny, I flash my highbeams frequently (to prevent people from violating my right of way), and 9 out of 10 times they pause/stop without demonstrating any negative reactions to my headlights.
