Does your bike do this?

Hey all,

I'm realizing that my bike becomes a little unstable on some of the bumpier, or less smooth roads around here. Basically, what happens is I'm riding along at highway speeds (50-75) and when i hit certain patches of highway, the bike starts bucking...i'm not talking a small amount of bump...really it's bucking like the front and back are not in sync.

Once place this happens is heading south on 101 out of SF. I get it a little coming into sf right before the 101/280 split. does this happen to anybody else (road is the cause) or is it just me? If just me and anybody has suggestions on what to check or fix on my bike, I sure would appreciate it. My bike is pretty smooth about 90% of the time, but these few occasions are becoming a little unsettling. My bike is a used 98 CBR 900rr.

Thanks for the advice.

Hmmm...that's interesting. I was going to ask the same thing about my bike. When I ride on roads like 85 it's like I'm a rodeo or something. Sucks shit man, my girlfriend says I look all crazy.

Maybe I need to get my bike checked out too. :cry

evo: I hear you. It must look ridiculous watching me try to hang on to my handlebars while lifting myself off the seat. I don't know if the suspension's tuned properly or not, but I guess I better get it looked at.

Alan7: how much you think it'll cost to check the bike out?

Yeah, I'd love to have my bike checked out. Anyone know of a good place in my neck of the woods? Also, I'd like to keep it as cost effective as possible.:teeth

Johnnyp,
If you are talking about the area of 101 just south of the 280/101 interchange, it the road. I commute it everyday, and my RR does the same thing. It is annoying as hell. It isn't as bad in the slow lanes.

Sloan,

That's a relief. It only happens on a very select few roads, but since I live in SF and my gf lives in Sunnyvale, it happens to be one of the roads i'm on a lot. :(

Hopefully, this means I can skip the suspension overhaul.

i was just gonna say that its the road........85 sucks for that tpp

could be the suspension too, if your rebound damping is set too low it could give the feeling that the bike's "kicking" you off the seat.

Ladeez;
Roads...smoads... Seriously now..as in no ss lingo.

Trucks drive down 101...280...and when they hit a bump...
They bounce....the only problem is of course is that they
are three tonnes...
The middle lane on 101 sucks...the sl0w lane..sux...the
car-pool lane is moderatly better.
You want sus taken care of go to Ahu-lan7 rider -goil....
Wish I had... I'm just so used to riding my boike now...that
if I had the sus....tuned I'd prolly wipe out.
=Silly Sod

what lane are you in? if you are in the far left lane then it is probably the road. i travel through there almost everyday so i know how bad that far left lane is. it is pretty torn up.

Its the road.

The only reason why I didn't think it was the road is that cars don't appear to move at all. I'm always in the left lane which everybody thinks is crap, so I guess it is the road.

Thanks all. I'll stay in the slow lane until the road rodeo dies down.

Seeya out there.

If I remember correctly, most of the areas you have described are made of that "slab" concreate shit. Over time those things have settled a little off from each other and the expansion cracks don't transition evenly, so you get this bucking effect. The faster your going the worse it gets. You don't notice it as much in cars cause of the longer wheelbase.

Theres a real nasty spot on 280 north just as it comes down from the ridge and your about to hit the 380 merge. I've seen cars get all squirlly there if their doing 80+

Never hurts to have your suspension checked out, but it's probably just the road as it always happens in the same areas.

did this happen on 101 south near the 3rd st exit? if so, its the road
