Dont be an ass let a motorcycle pass!

This "problem" is only a problem where conjested traffic breeds drivers that hate having to deal with a constant barrage of other drivers...so they blank them out of their minds.

City drivers come up to the Sierra with their city attitudes..and do it here as well....but...for the most part..up here...it's mountain people..and they pull over, and sometimes pull over a give a friendly wave.

The bumper stickers that say... FlatLanders Suck...didn't show up for nothing.

The "problem" is quickly resolved If you just move out...way out..of the city.

If your stuck in the city...the "problem" is not going to change.

Like the illustration WarpSpeed - the chunky guy on the FJR with the bags on could easily be ME ! - do I know you ? All he needs is an XD-3.

Like I've said before, initially I was STUNNED riding in the Dolomite mountains - you'd be railing along having a good ol' time and come up on some car and about the time I'd think "Bummer !" the guy would signal and fade right to allow you a quick & easy pass.

I'd always wave my thanks. It seems they 'get it' - that motorcycles will naturally travel faster on tight steep roads, and letting us by doesn't impact thier self-esteem.

The guys from Europe all wondered why I found this surprising - "This will NEVER occur to the vast majority of American drivers..."

FTFY. Washington and Oregon drivers are GREAT since the police up there will ticket you for cruising in the fast lane. I've even noticed that cars with Oregon plates in CA will move out of your way quickly.

Actually I don't ride in CA that much and when I did - on 9 and up in the Sierras, we got more than a few of those wave-bys.

It NEVER happens in Hawaii, or in many parts of the East that I have ridden - but did occur a couple of times down in the Smokey mountains. YMMV

I picture a Harley with a motorcyclist behind it on a DY road.

With the caption

"DONT BE AN ASS LET A MOTORCYCLE PASS"

FTFY. I like to be courteous when I overtake, but the behavior of a couple Harley riders encountered over the weekend make me question that approach. :rolleyes

*edit* I lived in Washington State almost 20 years and there are PLENTY of drivers there who bivouac in the passing lane.

not a lot of...twisty roads..with No "turnouts"...in the cities.

I know whats in the cities...and the roads bikers ride, on the outer fringes of the cities. I lived in Hayward and Dublin for about 10 years, rode all the roads that are talked about here.

If you haven't gotten that from my posts...it's just because you're not paying attention.

Oh Man, do they ever...never saw anyplace else like it (I'm including Oregon with Washington) I lived there for 20 years as well.

I mean two cars going down the highway..perfectly at the same speed..side by side...for maybe 15 or 20 miles...I'd use the on-ramp, merging lane, when one would come up...
to pass those rolling road blocks.

That is incorrect. Just because you are passing doesn't mean that you are speeding. The two are separate and different states that shouldn't be interchanged. This confusion is actually part of the over all issue.

Point is, making the message specific to motorcycles is like saying motorcycles usually go faster than cars and so you should let them by. That message isn't helping our image, since most cagers do not drive below the speed limit. Better to just say "if you're holding someone up, let them by."

Now twisties can be a special case. The statutory speed limit might be 45 while on some curve the yellow sign might "recommend" 25. Cagers may do 25 where we can do 45 comfortably, because we lean and they don't. I suppose getting that message across is possible, but will be difficult.

This is getting stupid. It's not only Prius' drivers who camp on the fast lane. If that's all you see out there, then maybe you need to have your eyes and prejudice checked.

I've been behind all different makes and brands of cars, vans, and trucks, a few would even try to close the gap on me. It's always been about the drivers, not what they drive.

Why not make a sign that point to the 'Slower Traffic Keep Right' sign? That sign is probably the most ignored sign on the roads... along with the YIELD sign.

And calling them names wouldn't make it more effective either... it might provoke and make it worse.
