What exactly is the purpose for dual reg'ing a plated dirt bike? And how do you go about doing it, just show up at the DMV with the off-road forms and your title?

Don't see the point of that... I have a plated drz and that's all I needed to ride at HH and Carnegie

A plate allows you to ride anywhere you can ride.

A green sticker allows you to ride in OHV parks.

For the most part, having a plate is good enough, however in places like the El Dorado National Forest, some of the USFS Rangers will require your plated bike to be fully decked out in street legal trim.

Most of us with plated dirtbikes take things like turn signals and mirrors off when riding strictly in the dirt. A friend got a verbal warning from a Ranger at Elkins for not having a mirror on her plated bike, even though she had a green sticker as well.

Of course, the trick is to simply remove the plate and only run the green sticker in places like that if you don't want to hassle with them.

This was at the campground BTW, where they do checks quite often it seems and are fairly underinformed...

Whats the registration process? The only thing I see on the DMV site is how to convert from on-road to off-road. Is it possible to get a sticker for an already plated bike?

License Plate allows you to ride any where that's legal that a street or offroad vehical can go. Thou you must keep all street equipment in working order. If the bike does not have these. This gives law enforcement, park rangers, an easier reasons to pull you over if they don't like what you are doing.

If you have a green sticker then you can remove all street gear and run just a bare bike. With out being hassled for not having the equipment on the bike. But you are only allowed to ride where green stickers are allowed.

I have seen one person get a big ticket at Hollister. He was speeding on the main road. He was given a speeding ticket with a long list of fix it tickets for his bike. no turn signals, non operational horn, non operational tail light, no mirrors, I don't know what he did to get the park ranger mad at him. He seamed to me to be a complete idiot. I did not now this person, He was parked next to us at the park. The ranger also told him to pack up and leave.
:rofl

I'm not 100% sure that you can do it, or the process. I would assume the process to get a green sticker for a plated bike would be similiar to getting a plate for a green stickered bike.

Make an appt at the DMV. Tell them what you want to do when you get there. They will give you a bunch of forms.

You will most likely need:

Title
Registration
Bike with you
CHP form 888 Statement of Facts (that you will have 2 fees now)

Probably not required, but bring your insurance card with you.

I'd be careful. Trying to get dual registration seems like a good way to loose your plate if every single model of your bike sold in CA didn't come with a plate. Besides, if you have a plate thats better than a green sticker, and you don't have to pay registration twice.

Both bikes I'm considering this for are street legal from the dealer, but it would be nice not to have to put all the street crap on to run at the track.

My TE450 is dual registered. Probably overkill... but I hate hassles and the extra $$ in registration is pretty negligible. Plate gets you in everywhere. In theory u r supposed to have all street legal gear... which I have never had. :dunno

And just tell them you want to dual register it at the DMV. No special process. You will get two renewals each year.
