Earthquake preparedness thread - post your suggestions or questions

Another year of silence from the Pacific Subduction Zone. I love Washington, but we’re about 100 years overdue for a 9.0+ that historically happens every 400 years or so.

Anyone else refresh their kit in light of the Alaska quake? Not that it's related, but a definite reminder of what's in store.

Excellent question! I've prepared our household but then I do work in Emergency Services.

Its not difficult to prepare yourself and your home for the upcoming event(s). Do not assume that police and fire will be available when you need them. They will be handling more calls then they have staffing.

Be self sufficient for 72 hours.
Talk to the kids about a meeting spot if there is no mobile service.
Prepare to not being able to drive the car due to traffic jams.
know how to shut off the natural gas line into your home. Have a wrench or spanner near the shut-off valve.

Please think about the possible scenario. Don't be a victim. Be prepared and be able to assist others.

Emergency Potable Water Supply

This may or may not be hard to implement with an earthquake, but it could be a life saver. We used it for the PG&E party last week.

The 4.5 we just had was fun. LOL, I didn't even get out of bed for that one.

I posted a thread a few days back with questions about portable solar panels and didn't get much traction. Anybody in here have any experience using them? Something like:

https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Charge...rport+21w+solar+charger&qid=1570655332&sr=8-3

I have a great 14k mAh battery I use to jump cars and stuff, and it has all kinds of ports I can charge devices with off the grid, but would love to know more about what the solar charging experience is like for that kind of thing.

I have one. I used it while camping in Hawaii for 2 weeks. I'd leave it to charge the power bank during the day then charge my cell phone at night. Worked well but took a whole day to charge 25% of the power bank.

Right on. That is some of the info I am trying to get. Do you know what the wattage on your guy is or what the MAh on the battery bank is?

Watched the Lima Prieta 30th anniversary deal last night.

Some hero’s for sure. Some good info beyond that.
I am barely prepared for a week. Need to update my plan. A bit.

What a great thread. I just purchased two backpacks, for the Wife and I, to use as emergency bug out bags. I am going to forgo those uber expensive meal kits. I was at the supermarket and was reading the expiration date on various packaged foods. Things like Rice A Roni, Knorrs rice dishes have sell by dates of 3-2021. You can save a boatload of money by buying things off the supermarket shelves.

Lots of great advice in this thread.

It's been over 5-1/2 years, so I guess it was your imagination. :laughing

I did the best thing I could do, in regards to earthquakes, I moved to the safest (from earthquakes) big city in California. :twofinger

Thought I'd bump this since today is the anniversary of the Loma Prieta quake

Necro-thread raising for awareness.

Hayward Fault simulation @ magnitude 7 originating in San Pablo Bay.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcbK0qGuOsY

This does not include the connecting Rodgers Creek Fault, nor the Maacama Fault. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maaca...r_California_faults_and_ages_of_volcanics.png

Geologically, the Hayward Fault is on a 140-150 cycle, last event was in 1868. Doing basic math means that we're 9 years past the cusp and could get a major event any time.

On your marks, get set, ..... BOOM

It's very interesting that you post these years old links because I was coincidentally thinking in my executive meeting this afternoon about a large scale earthquake and the etiquette of stomping over our director to get to the door and exit the building.

I'm thinking of Michael Buffer...

Tell your director that you're going to be wearing Vibram-soled boots from now on and his corpse will have Vibram-patterned stomping marks unless he gets going with emergency preparedness... :D
