Electric Generators - Why?

I have a Generac 5000W/6250 surge.. Looks like the carb crapped out during the last power outage. I used it with a kettle and toaster oven.

The upside with the non-inverter basic generators is they take under an hour for a full overhaul and they are usually good as new. Will probably do that tonight.

That said, am thinking of downgrading to a lower power genny, I never use the full 5000W or the 240V connections.

I have same Generator. Have it ready to power all the house wiring. It has enough wattage to run furnace, Refrigerator, Freezer, Lights and more. Only thing it can't get the AC to start, too much initial surge current. Also keep the electronics off in case of spikes.

Anyway, a fridge full of food is very expensive when you can't replace it because the power is out everywhere...

This time of year you should always keep a large ready pan or two in the freezer as you will have a large block of ice which placed in the fridge will keep it cold for at LEAST 2 days, more likely 3.

Worked like a charm when I was out of power for 40 hours last go round.

This time I have power but my friends don't so I gave them what I have and am making more as we speak.

Keeping the fridge cool also allows your freezer to hold for 40 hours.

At 40 hours the frozen food survived.

Kind of ironic how much energy it takes to remove energy. :laughing

I was most worried about my fish tanks' temperatures during the last outage which was 40 hours as the water temps dropped 10 degrees though I have battery powered bubblers for oxygen.

Power came back on, flipped on the light on the Cichlid tank and damned if those horny little fuckers hadn't created 12 more little Cichlids during the outage! :laughing

I tap my ring on the side of the tank when I go to feed them and they come rushing out like a little tiny Cichlid army.

Fun to watch.

I was most worried about my fish tanks.

My convicts are skittish as hell but I had not even thought of worrying about them... I keep them a little cold anyway. And now I realize they are getting old.

I should put a few gallon water jugs in the freezer - works in the cooler during camping trips.

My buddy lost his reef tank. He was out of town when they shut off his power.
Anyone want a 60 gal tank and all the goodies including pump and lights? He's offering it for a donation to Barf.

Yeah, he had that tank running for over 20 years.

Look into Micro-Air.net, you may get the AC to run with a little help.

A UPS probably would have had enough stored energy to keep it running if it was of sufficient capacity.

Just like a UPS on an internet router would keep the internet going. If your safety depends on maintaining internet or phone capability, it's up to you to ensure that it stays up in the event of power loss. They don't cost that much.

My tanks dropped temp as it was cool last month when the power went out.

Or was it a few weeks ago?

Getting old. :laughing

Oh man, that is horrible.

As you likely know fish have PERSONALITY.

My Oscar was a moody SOB! :laughing

I think I killed him by being a complete idiot and not increasing my water changes as he grew.

I'm a fucking moron.

I loved that fish.

I'm sure you poor friend did as well.

Not a chance; large tank water heaters suck electricity.

300 watts for 60-100 gallon tank.

I bought battery powered bubbler that run on D cells.

They went 40 hours no problem and might have done 40 more.

But for heat you'd need a gas powered generator or similar.

That would suck because lots of work and money can be sunk into those.

I'm holding out for a good deal on a 180g + plexi tank. I had one for a year but lost it in the break-up.

Latest PG&E news: 850,000 customers could lose power, beginning Saturday
In a press release Friday afternoon, Pacific Gas and Electric said it is monitoring a potentially severe weekend wind event that could lead the utility company to turn off power to 850,000 Northern California customers. PG&E estimates that there are roughly three individuals in each household, meaning that the estimated amount of people with power will top 2.5 million. The critical fire weather is forecast to begin Saturday night and continue into Monday.

PG&E said the shutoffs could occur in 36 counties across portions of Humboldt, the Sierra foothills, Western Sacramento Valley, North Bay, and across the greater Bay Area, Monterey Bay and northern Central Coast on Saturday, Oct. 26. Parts of Kern County could lose power on Sunday.
If you don't already have a generator, it's probably too late at this point.

Has anyone had experience with generators destroying their electronics?

I've heard of this but never actually met someone who this happened to...

I have more of the construction type and it's been fine so far. We've used it at least a few times every year for the last six years.

From the product description of my unit:

With inverter technology, you are using clean power, meaning its safe for electronics such as televisions, tablets, laptops, and other power sensitive equipment. The inverter module converts the raw power from DC to AC output.
