Elon Musk: cars you can drive will eventually be outlawed

No its not, smart meter was designed to talk to electronic devices in your home and allowed when you could and couldnot use it. A main scenario was the smart meter wouldnt allow electric dryers to operate under peak hours and forces users to use their dryer in offpeak hours.

Or in other words the smart meter actually failed to implement its main features to the public, as of now i can still use my dryer whenever i please and i have a pge smart meter

I will look into it some more. Smart AC was rolled out for people you participated and did not opt out. Basically, during a power emergency (imminent blackout) the Smart AC would throttle back, not necessarily turn off your AC. I think it is a good idea.

FYI, Tesla makes grid batteries as backups for the grid and businesses. The grid battery business is budding right now as the grid management is becoming really interested in energy storage.

Electric cars all plugged in to the grid can act as a energy backup and they call it V2G for Vehicle to Grid. The tech was demonstrated years ago by PG&E.

I opted "In" on that program. I can't think of an instance where they shut me off or reduced power though. :cool

this is a great example of how the smart meter is taking its baby steps, but in its full grown mature state, ideally it would not allow you to use your electrical appliances when and how you wanted it too.

the smart meter has been out for a couple years now, yet i do not see new appliances being labeled as "compatible with smart meters" or are they now??? Last time i bought appliances was in 2012, and nothing was directly communicating with my smart meter that i know of.

a year or 2 ago

i came home from dental work with a numb mouth

i had no power at my house, imagine talking to pge and directing info with a 1/2 numb face

3 hours later, a tech came out, started probing stuff, basically said your meter is off, local/central station pge shut you down - you forgot to pay your bill

i was like, um no im on autopay and quickly dug up proof of my last months transaction on my phone

then he goes back into his truck calls in for about 20 mins, i guess he gets the ok to swap out the smartmeter, comes out of his truck grabs a new smartmeter swaps mine out and restores power, he says its uncommon maybe 1/1000 homes have a problem with their smart meters
