I keep hearing about people getting 55+ mpg on their Mini-Ninjas, but that's not the case for me. I did about 180 miles last Saturday out at the coast, with the bike well up in the rev-range through every corner I could find. When I filled up, I calculated about 45 mpg.

What should I look for - fuel filter, air filter, plugs? Or is the promise of 55+ an empty one unless you weigh under 150# and never take it above 9000 RPMs?

GaryJ, what do you get for mpg through the SC Mountains on The Wife's Ninja?

55+ MPG reports usually come from the people who:

1. Have the bike exactly stock and don't know any better (+10% Speedo/Odo error attributes to a higher MPG)
2. Regeared to somewhere around 15/41 or 15/42 (stock is 14/45)
3. Ride on flat lands all the time
4. Have excellent throttle control

I personally get 50 MPG for mixed riding, pinned on the highway and hard on the streets, with 15/45 and F:110/90-16;R:130/90-16 tires.

No offense to those of you with different bikes, but I don't care what your mileage is/was. I've had plenty of other bikes, too, and they aren't germane (or Michael, or Tito) to the discussion. I'm interested in hearing from those with EX250 experience. :p

High 40s sounds right if you're flogging it. I used to get 200 miles to a tank, with a 1 tooth larger front sprocket (that bike really punished you for choosing the wrong gear.)

Interesting. Gearing is stock and, oddly, my speedo is spot-on (as verified by GPS), so my mpg should be, too. My throttle control is reasonably smooth (when I want it to be), but as I said, I was flogging the bike pretty hard and definitely not being genteel.

Heh. We both said "flogging". Heh heh.

I have enough trouble keeping the RPMs right for cornering speed as it is...I can't imagine having +1 up front. Of course, I had an SV1000s for 35k miles and then a 954rr, so the Happiest Little Ninja™ is a mite bit different.

My stock 2008 250 got about 45'ish. And I kept it up over 10K all the time.

Well, on my GZSX10000547RR, I get 48.5mpg when I do 70%
highway 30% surface streets, but only 46.78mpg when I do 55% highway 45% surface streets. I have a conversion factor that accounts for displacement and makes allowances for valves per cylinder and air vs. water cooled...

:rofl I didn't think of that.
For sometime I wonder why I get 55-57 highway and 48-50 during twisty.
With the bigger front tire, it now makes sense. Meaning I get 60+ mpg if I was using a stock tires(smaller).

F:100/90/16 (Cruiser tires), R:130/90/16, +1 tooth on the front.
That said I ride at an average speed of 75-80 mph on the freeway, 9-12K rpm on the twisty.

BTW: for more statistic evaluations check this

It would be nice if Fuelly.com would allow riders to list mods made. You can't tell from the listings how much deviation from "standard" mpg is due to riding style and how much is due to bike modifications.

I'd be willing to bet the majority of it is riding style.

I can vary my mileage tremendously depending on how I'm treating the bike on any given day.

And FWIW, I averaged low 40's on my completely stock 250 before I converted it to track use. Now...it's probably somewhere in the 20's, but I'm not keeping track.

I think another part of his curiosity goes to whether his maintenance on the 250 was up to date, or the typical problems that drags mpg down.
Usually for me bad mpg is a sign of something going wrong.

I bet a lot of people exaggerate their mileage.

I have to wonder how many of them calculate it properly, or just figure a quick average.

I found that my EX500 got worse mileage than people were reporting, but I know mine was accurate :p

Well in that case, I borrowed my friend's 250R for a ride in the hills to take pictures for him, and I brought it back to him with an additional ~120 miles on the odo.

He said that when he went to go fill it up the day after, he calculated it at 61mpg, when his previous high was around 55. I'd like to think that aside from being a bit smaller, I'm also a bit smoother on the throttle :party

Take that for what it's worth.
