the thing i've figured out is, that i guess he wants my approval on shit he does. Like a proud little kid trying to impress his parents or some shit like that.

yeah, been there. I just stopped taking the calls, dumped the texts n messages and moved on. sounds easy. felt hard. really was just that simple.

:thumbup to "negative attention' comment- some guys need attention and it doesn't matter what kind it is as long as they get it. that's just plain destructive and pathetic. you're better than that- blow him off.
if he manages to get through on the phone, tell him you're washing your hair. watching paint dry. contemplating nothingness. and then just shut up until he gets bored and hangs up.

I'm friends with several ex's. It's best to wait 10-15 years before taking that step. I still have a couple to call for sex, but I ain't THAT horny and desperate, and it's always a mistake, like using toilet paper that's been wiped already.
