f’ing ANTS

i have never had good luck with bait. my resulting go-to tactic has been to monitor around the house and garden, locate the tiny holes leading to the nests, and inject a very narrow stream of pesticide directly into the nest (i use raid bug barrier - set on stream, not spray). we used to have a huge problem with them, but now it’s minimal maintenance. the thing you need to get adept at is sleuthing them out at their source. pro tip - follow the dust trail. and although we are using pesticide, it’s extremely targeted (the holes are like 1/8 wide, and i just squirt the pesticide in and fill them to the top - no widespread distribution). it seems to do the trick without collateral damage - we still have lots of other bugs - it’s just the ants that are wiped out.

another cool thing - once you’ve got the juice in there - just come back a day or two later and hose the area down with water and it permeates it deep underground into all their tunnels. done and dusted.

Terro is great stuff, i dont suggest a dime size glob tho, as it will dry up and harden and be worthless. put a drop on a small piece of cardboard, spread it out a bit to increase surface area, so more ants can get to it at one time.

ants also hate chalk (powdered). sprinkle some in the area where they originate, and they wont come near the stuff.

All I can say is you guys have it easy. This year has been pretty dry in the South so the ant are coming in the house more and more. But wait these are Mother F***ing fire ants not your normal sweet ass ant that just wants your sugar and water. These Mother F***ers like to sting and it's not just one they wait until a whole gang of them are on you then on cue they sting altogether because why warn you with just one sting when they can inflict maximum pain with all their friends and have a party.

This last weekend for some reason they decided to invade the kitchen. Well they got all over the dishes and for some unknown reason decided that the leftover dishwater was a pool and so fuck it why not go swimming. While they were at it they decided that the party barge otherwise known as a scotch brite pad was great for laying around and catching rays. Well the wife decided to grab the sponge to wipe something and low and behold it was on like donkey kong. Our friendly neighborhood fire ants crawled up her hand and then let her have it. I saw the aftermath and it was not pretty it looked like she had caught a case of chicken pox there were so many welts. So I broke out the Raid and annihilated the little bastards. Then I called our exterminator and had them come out and do another spray and anthill eradication walk. I really hate fire ants and pray to god they somehow come up with a way to nuke them all from orbit.

Diamatious earth (sp)? A powder that will work it’s way into the ants exoskeleton and break it open. Just put a line of it around the entry point. Any ant that crosses it will die In the next few days.

Used mostly for fleas but just as affective against ants ants.

Yeah, DE works well, but be sure you get the food-grade DE. Any other kind can harm you and family/pets.

Accidentally stepped partly onto an red ant mound here in NC a few days ago.

That was a mistake :( Damned ankle is still itching pretty badly.

watch out, before long they'll be doing this

+100 on the Terros. They're just corn syrup and boric acid but they work great.

Thanks to the kids (messy little assholes), I had a MASSIVE kitchen invasion this weekend.

Instead of doing the usual thing and freaking out, making the kitchen spotless/killing them with Windex and wiping them up, I put out three of those ant traps, and spilled a bunch of the liquid along the countertop, and just left it all day.

I wish I'd taken pictures, because there was a superhighway of ants after an hour. I mean, must have been 30-40 ants wide, a black ribbon.

They showed no interest in going anywhere else, so I left that part of the kitchen like that overnight. The next day?

Nothing. Nada. Not a single one left.

The ant problem seems to be pretty bad this year for me as well.

Terro works good, but if you leave the bait (as suggested on the packaging) out I find that the ants come back.

it's horrible this year

I've never seen it this bad.

I've gone through so much terro it's sad. Shit dries up to fast but it's the only thing that's attracting, and thus killing them, this year
