Feedback on GPS trackers and tamper alerts

My motion alert works very well and having in app sensitivity adjustment is real nice! My only complaint is that the alert is not loud or persistent and as such it will not wake you from sleep in most cases. I spoke with them about it and was told they would put an engineer on it and have it capable of jolting you from a deep snooze. This is the kind of vendor support that is so rare and is very much appreciated! Tip-o-the-hat to Iota.:thumbup

What sort of updates are you expecting?

Probably something that inspires me to go out and buy one. It is going to be a lot of work to get their network of base stations built up. It's one thing to see coverage models and that is really the only area of interest. Also, the direct RF range - which seemed a bit optimistic.

Well I ordered 2 more, not sure if that's the endorsement you're looking for but there it is.

I've been riding around the Bay Area mostly and I get coverage everywhere.

Most bikes that are stolen in the Bay Area don't leave the area immediately, so your chances of recovery are pretty good.

If you're in the Bay Area - this should be a no-brainer.

If you're outside the area, the value is that you'll get a notification if the bike leaves your geofence or gets tampered with outside your home.

hi guys, sorry, been busy with some pretty cool updates on the next version. We're adding a louder alert for the notification for iOS (and hopefully for Android) soon after. There's going to be another really cool feature coming out late next week or early week after.

Stay tuned!

Has anyone purchased this tracker? Thoughts? I am debating whether to get one for my bike. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I am totally sorry, but it's been about 4 months...what were we talking about?

Last I heard it was something pretty cool...

Cool today has a half life of like, a day...

I'm using it still. Working great. Definitely worth it 100%.

My friend borrowed the bike and I can track him.

Here is the tracking data from a ride over the weekend. Screenshot from the app. As you can see I did a ride on the Isle of 9.

Cool. Thanks for chiming in. I'm considering getting this for my bike. How hard would it be to remove the little tracker thingie?

It depends on how you mount it. It's really small and can be hidden anywhere. I mounted mine in the inside of the fairing. You do have to give it power somehow, it has a battery that lasts for a bit should the power be cut.

Interesting to see the base station dead zones.

Would be great to see Iota partner with LEO agencies. If Iota can donate some base station USB sticks for use with roving LEO squad car laptops just imagine the improved quality and results.

Reading this whole thread I wish I had ordered one back in December. :laughing

Just did a nice loop through the Peninsula including Highway 9, Skyline, and La Honda. As you can see the iota tracker saw the bike almost through the entire route. I have no doubts that I'd probably be able to recover my bike if it was stolen.

Pretty happy with mine. Battery lasts 4-6 weeks w/o power depending on how you configure it (geofence, etc). Less if you leave the tamper alert on all the time. Long enough that I haven't bothered to hard-wire it yet.

mrzuzzo has it right... all the data gets fed through our cloud hosted on Amazon AWS... maintenance cost is really affordable right now at ($500/mo), so we've put 4 years worth of funds in the bank in case the company does go under.

Hmm.. :thumbdown

are there any alternatives to this solution ?

I'm just started testing the Scout system. It's not as small as the Iota, but I think in most applications that won't matter. We'll have a formal review in a future issue of CityBike.

When Iota shut down they recommended Whistle. https://www.whistle.com/

Not sure if anyone here has feedback...

If Whistle works just as well as the Scout, then the monthly price of Whistle makes it the clear winner here. Someone should get them on-board the motorcycle train, so they can make it a bit more targeted and thus increase their market share.
