Flipping on Craigslist

Got a cite for that?

CA DMV website.

Here.

Here.

And here.

I also spoke with the DMV Mothership about it because I was thinking about doing it as a hobby... fix and sell, but not on a large scale. Granted, it can be difficult to prove, but real curbstoners who turn over a fair number of vehicles can be and have been caught.

The whole "number of cars per year" you can sell is a misnomer, at least in CA. Maybe it was true at some point in time, but currently, buying and selling cars for profit, without a license, is not legal in CA.

I decided it was not worth the hassle.

It's like going 58 in a 55, I wouldn't let the letter of the law stop me from buying/selling. Heaven forbid they miss out on one taxation of something that's already been taxed five times.

For sure, but after doing the maths, it simply didn't make sense. You either buy, fix and sell for fun at a low rate, get a legit business set up or be a full on curbstoner.

For me, I'd rather do a project car for myself than try to worry about making a dime. Unless it's what you do, making a worthwhile profit can be difficult. I'm not wasting all my free time to make a few bucks.

Word, it depends what the goal is. You could keep an eye on CL and pick up one of those exceptionally good deals you find every now and again. Tinker and flip for fun and occasional profit. If the goal is consistent income, it does get a little more complex.

Really depends on the vehicle, etc. A lot of people can't fix their own cars, and can't pay the price quoted from a shop. I picked up a Tacoma some years back for $300. The owner had been quoted 4k to fix all the things wrong with it, and the owner couldn't swing it. I did it all for another $300 and a couple weekends, then turned around and sold it.

Some of it requires a certain flexibility as it's never consistent across one area. Buying things before and after Christmas works well, especially as those credit card bills turn up.

Selling large items around tax return time works well, too.

YMMV.

I probably don't know what the fuck I'm doing, but my experience with finding a good deal on CL is kind of like that camel going through the eye of the needle that ole JC mentioned. Just the agro with sorting out the crooks and con man is mind numbing.

That takes time and/or luck. Extremely good deals like that go extremely quickly. I know, I've tried to jump on a few and they're almost always gone by the time I can get there. Other people have more time on their hands than I do, I guess. :D But if something like that fell in my lap, I'd definitely take advantage.

It can be difficult to even come across a fair transaction let alone a good deal.

Nigerian scammers aside, it's amazing how many cars are:

Salvaged
Stated as clean title and are not
Sold "for a friend/relative/etc."
Have lost or altered titles
Are grossly overpriced
Fucked with beyond belief (that litany of "modifications" isn't a good thing)
Should be destined for the scrap heap
Won't pass smog

I like using craigslist to find things that are rare/beautiful, but have a limited secondary market. Right now I am buying persian rugs.

You can also find good deals on furniture, although you have to wade through alot of ikea shit and ugly ass lazy-boy sectionals that look like they were parked in front of 60 inch TVs out in the burbs.

I got both. I'm also willing to push things.

"I've got someone who said they wanted to buy it so you're second in line..."
"I've got cash in hand and can be there in twenty minutes"
"Well......okay"

Or just asking someone if they want to sell something-that boat your neighbor hasn't used in three years? It's for sale-they just haven't realized it yet.

The problem is most people who are searching CL for something specific they want to buy are looking for a hell of a bargain to begin with. Or else why wouldn't they just buy it new? Most times people know what an item is "worth". Which means you have to be very familiar with said item and know what price you will sell it at, then subtact another possible 10-20%, because like ^^ said, everyone wants to haggle.
It helps that the item you're selling has a decent demand, and is still useful to someone else. When I am shopping CL, I'll already have or simultaneosly be price comparing at Ebay, Amazon, the retail new price, and whether its worth it to buy used. I'm sure its entirely possible to be a professional 'flipper', but like I said you better know the items you're flipping real well.
As most know, anytime you sell an item on CL you're gonna get a ton of responses from people who aren't serious but just wanna "get one over on you" by wasting your time.

My sale ads are always lengthy. Most times I really don't wanna do the whole haggle thing because I know in the end I just get so tired of it and let it go for lower than what I was comfortable with or its gonna put me in a bad mood. So I always price my stuff at slightly lower than what the going rate is, then state FIRM. Don't bother sending a reply if you are offering 1cent below what I am asking. I will not ship, I will not drive halfway to meet you because you live kinda far so you can leave me hanging. You will show you are serious about the purchase or at least to take a good look at it by driving yourself over while I'm sitting my lazy ass on my couch playing video games. I will accept cash only, and not the soggy shit stained currency that looks like it was pulled out of a hooker's sweaty ass. Go and get me crisp bills, in the denominations I want. If its not to my liking I'm sorry you will have wasted your drive over even if we agree on the price. Sure sometimes it takes me a while to sell something but in the end its by my terms, all you have to do is agree or move on. When someone starts asking me questions about the sale, I always ask them did you even read the ad? If you did you have my answer. Some people wanna tell me their whole life sob story and I've been fooled into it once or twice by listening for over an hour. Never again. I'll just point to the ad and pictures. Call me back when you are ready to confirm you are coming over with ALL the cash.

I surprised myself one time. Having summers off I can go pickup things anytime. I called on an item and offered 2/3's the price. Seller balked blah blah I just listed it.

I then said "Well do you want $$ now or do you wanna wait until the week for $$?"

Caught him off guard, he laughed and I went and got it that day.

I never understood people who make "lines" to buy their ish. Me, the first a-hole who puts the right amount of money in my grubby hands gets it. I absolutely will not hold an item for someone.

There is a website

and your gonna LOVE me and HATE me for it

Love me cuz imma show you how to flip

Hate me cuz your gonna be opening up your wallet everytime your on that site

Website is a forum based site where individuals post up excruciating deals and weird random loopholes to get these said deals.

Alot of the things bought off that forum can be sold on craigslist or ebay for 500%

The website is slickdeals.net

I just used the dumb website to take a MSRP HP laptop off hp.com from $650 - $577, i had to jump through some hoops and place the order via phone - WHO DOES THAT THESE DAYS?

But yup if you followed the directions by placing the order over the phone BOOM extra $30 off just like that, i did another suggested thing to take another $50 off

The other one i just saw on the site, a 4tb WD portable external drive on sale for $20 @ walmarts, these can be flipped anywhere from $50-100 all day everyday on ebay and craigslist

Who's gonna buy a used HD? I ain't plugging someone else's porn stash into any computer I own.

Dude came into my office recently to show me a file on his usb stick. I told him "show me in his computer" pointing to another guy in my office.

its brand new sealed namebrand WD HD, msrp i think like $120, right now on sale for $59.99, bought via the forum = $20

gg your welcome

Its like a daily thing of purchased xx qty and resold and got x for free.
