foot off peg before turns?(MotoGP & WSBK)

It has been discussed before and it has everything to do with using a GP shift pattern and high rearsets. When downshifting into the corner you are lifting up on the shift lever. It can be difficult to slide your foot back up on peg so they swing it out and up to set teir foot on the peg. I do it as well, sometimes you just take your time getting your foot on the peg. It has nothing to do with balance.

My vote goes to high rearsets and not wanting to get hung up on the shifter. Or it's just widely irrelevant...let it hang, let it slide, whatever.

Yeah it's more balance and personal riding style, I don't race but I find myself moving my ass to the side and sometimes foot off the peg..just whatever makes you more comfortable when ur taking that turn...the "proper" way is to have both feet on the pegs..I don't even do that much I sorta keep my toes on the peg only.

here's my answers from the same post on 600rr forum:
I heard they do it because it's easier to take the foot off the peg before the turn and placing it back onto the peg than moving the foot on it.

I also heard that some of them do it as an old motocross reflex because may started riding dirt, or ride dirt a lot. I think someone mentioned that before.

Geeze, they do it because it faster to do it that way!

Most of the really fast guys up on the 9 do it and they smoke everyone else up there.

One will never truly be fast until one masters this technique. :|

d. Why is it a new thing? I only started seeing them do it recently, like 2 years ago? Started watching racing like 5 years ago.

Ever watch 500's racing from the mid 90's? They were riding so crossed up there head was in the spot of the opposite mirror :laughing

Just because they didn't use a certain technique when Kenny Roberts Sr was racing doesn't meat it isn't valid now. Things change.

I had always thought its the only way to stretch out a bit while racing. Flex the knee, relax the leg. I can only imagine how difficult it is to maintain full race posture for the duration of a GP, I'd get crampy.

You can't take the right foot off b/c of the rear brake. Too much energy required to put a foot back on while accelerating.

Just a hunch.

I have always agreed with the GP shift pattern theory. You gotta remember that these guys sometimes shift through the turns. You generally only see it on left turns not right. This is because with your knee scraping on the ground your foot is locked in. easier to slide it out and off right before the turn starts

Always made sense to me.

It is the GP theory. If you run high rearsets and set the shifter up high it is hard to get the leverage to downshift(pulling lever up). If you watch Rossi before he enters a corner his foot is out but his toes are pointed in towards the shifter. If you want a feel for it raise your shifter up to the same height as your peg and try to shift. They have to run their shifter up that high to keep from dragging it on the track.
