For you old Barfers, California DMV Eliminates Knowledge Test Requirement for Drivers 70 and Older

This is a horror story. My grandfather was going to kill erebody up in heah until they took his license away.
tell it to all of the jackasses on motos. came around a blind left hander a week or so ago, with two sport bikes dragging knee, passing over the double yellow - full on in my lane with a gnats ass between us when they dove back in front of the car they were passing. first guy was a definitely a pucker moment. no clue how the second guy made it. if i’d collected them in our truck with the heavy duty cattle guards over the grill, i wouldn’t have thought twice about them while hosing the gore off it afterwards.

I am often surprised at the risk riders will take in the twistees.
I had a crew do the DY pass thing through turns where you could not see on the Isle of 9 three weeks ago.

I was praying I would not find one of the 6 splattered. I was happy to see the pissed off drivers moving over a bit.. one was hugging the fog line for me and I was "I ain't those guys" and waived him back.

That has to shock the drivers which is not a good thing for us.

That's for sure.

I recall the owner of a local Santa Cruz mountain road used to do shit like this.

My last DT was in South Dakota when I turned 70.
I expected more of a test, for memory because of that number.
What I got was a little vision tests, some new figures on How many feet from an intersection, do you, , , Those kind of numbers change. New traffic lines, traffic cones, crossovers, and roundies.
Nothing about motos specific.

Great to hear. I hate the DMV test.

I'm good at multiple choice. Give me a ScanTron test in college and I wAs busting the curve. But...

The DMV asks dumb questions. For example, I'm not going to drink and drive. Thus, I don't need to know the penalty for that behavior. Six months, one year, jail, remove a limb...I don't care. Not happening.

Despite this attitude, got 100% on my recent, You Are 70, Take This Test. But I missed something on the moto because I forgot to check the box with THEIR answer instead of a more logical alternative.

Do any of you interact with people that you know could not pass this test? I figure there must be hordes of people driving without a license given their lack of intelligence exhibited in various transactions.

I have a neighbor who used to ride. She was taken out in the exact manner you described. Only she was riding her own bike at the time so the crash was very brutal. She almost lost her left leg. It took numerous surgeries over a period of 2+ years to restore partial use of her leg and she still limps.

My license was due for renewal this past April, so in March I went in for the obligatory "old guy" test. I had a Non-Commercial Class A license, and the clerk couldn't figure out what to do about that so they made me take the Air Brake test - ignoring the fact that the vast majority of people pulling large fifth wheels do not have air brakes. A bunch of really esoteric questions about the theory behind the construction of air brakes which I had never seen before - I tried 3 times and kept missing a passing grade by one question, so finally I said "screw this" - we no longer had a large fifth wheel, and most likely will never get one again so I didn't really need the Non-Commercial Class A anyway. So I said "Let's just go with my Class C score, which I aced, and the M1 addition", paid my $45 and left.

Then, 4 months later we left the state and landed here in Tennessee - walked in to the DMV and waited for about 15 minutes, did the eye test, handed over some money, and walked out with a full color paper copy of my new license, including the picture. So, I gave $45 to the Ca DMV to have a valid license that lasted 4 months!

Did the same with our vehicle plates: paid the Ca registration for 3 vehicles in February, March, and April to the tune of about $1500 and then registered all 3 vehicles here in Tennessee for about $300! Again, walked in to the county courthouse, walked right up to the clerk's window and were done within minutes.

And about 3 weeks ago we paid off the loans on 2 of the vehicles - once we got the pink slips in hand we went back to the County Clerk's office to replace them with Tennessee titles - we received the Tennessee titles in the mail 3 days later!

By a driving test —. Ddddduh!
That is where most older drivers fail.

Knowing the rules of the road are pretty well known to a 70 year old.

I am thinking this is not the death of us.
My old man would study the written test at 80 and ace it. The driving test was the deal for him and I bet most senior drivers.

I too have not taken a knowledge test for years.
Because I have an amazing skill at getting speeding tickets like right before my renewal is due, I have had to take it a few times. I find passing the written test is way harder than the driving test, because some of the new crap has nothing to do with driving.

I remember being particularly aggravated by missing some questions about what circumstances you were allowed to smoke in a car with children.

As a dude who doesn't smoke and doesn't have kids, how the fuck am I supposed to know anything about that as a law that was passed 20 years or some shit after I got my license?

and I'm hovering like a fly waiting for the windshield on the freeway.

My license came up for renewal in August and at 73 I was required to take the driving test and online was an option. Thinking I know everything I just did the online test and failed  Then I was required to take the test at DMV and made an online appointment. The soonest appointment was in November so obviously that wasn't going to keep me legal and went to DMV at 7 AM and got inline with the rest of the folks. I had studied some, but overthought the questions and failed again plus failed the M1 test . So I decided I'd better study and took the drivers test at DMV and past, but failed the M1 test again . So back to DMV to take the M1 test again and was told I had to take both test over again!!! Well I passed both, but what a nightmare :ROFLMAO:. FYI when taking the online or test at DMV, if you don't know a question just pass by it! If you get enough question correct test will just say you passed and you will not have to answer those questions. I have over half a million miles on bikes ;)
