For me at least, what is funny in joking about France's military performance is that they are (obviously) a rich, developed country, and SHOULD be awesome. But, the habit of the French to be incompetent (Maginot is just the easiest example) is what is funny. There isn't much to be made fun of when a poor, untrained army gets its ass kicked, but when it's a rich country with a long military history, well, THAT is funny.

O shit yeah. The last 150 years the army leadership has been spectacularly bad. Eisenhower considered the French Army and Navy leaders as dangerous and incompetent at their best.

The Italians seem to be much worse than the French. At least the French have won some major wars against the English, etc. The Italians? Like you say, the got spanked in Ethiopia.

It must be something in the water. Italy seems to prefer fancy, pretty equipment, that can't compare in practical terms.

To say the US military is overrated seems rather silly. We clearly have superior weapons, excellent training and tactics. The largest failures from military adventures following WWII (not that there weren't major clusters then as well) are due to the politics that surround the fighting of the conflicts. The US leadership and population as a whole have no stomach for "total" war that involves killing lots of folks.

We are all happy to lob some bombs at arms distance, but when it comes to boots on the ground, politically correct forces take over and hamstring soldiers with impossible rules of engagement etc.

My thought is, stay the hell out of conflicts unless you have a plan and will to win, not just sit in a foreign land holding your dick while primitive forces tak pot shots at you.

which of course makes the point. to hold frances military ability and to feel that they are all "surrender mponkeys" because of poor leadership is stupid, and idiotic. it also discounts a strong restience movement durring their occupation. and their clear success in mali so far, which shows how poorly OUR military has done under poor leadership.

its mostly idiot americans trying to feel better about themselves despite not having to face a massive army rolling over their borders on the home front, and a masisve world war centered around their land. nice and safe between two oceans, with no real threat of ionvasion to your family and loved one. but we have one big "attack" and the country is so cowardly we are hot to trot to bomb the shit pout of a country that had nothing top do with it, because we can. throw away all our civil liberties and hate on any country that doesn't support us (even tho we were wrong as can be)

the usa military is overrated because of success's are actually quite few and far between. and thats against countries that can hardly defend themselves. and ourt tactics suck. all we know how to do is fight the last war. it took a decade to find ONE guy. we are STILL in that country. we bombed iraq with no real plan on what to do next. our tactics were about as stupid as you get in vietnam. even in WW2, we as a country like to forget that the soviets played an actually larger role in the success of the allies. we fall right into the propoganda that we did it all ourselves

Not our fight. If the French want to get embroiled in the middle of civil war where you have Al Qaida and friends on one side and Hezbollah and Iran on the other than let them.

The military is not overrated and combat tactics are largely sound. The way we get in wars and to a certain extent fight them is a function of politics.

If there was a mandatory draft and every dipshit voter and politician was at risk for getting themselves or their kids called up, might have less of this swinging dick mentality.

There can be no doubt the American war machine is head a shoulders above its nearest rival, but it doesn't mean shit if it is employed in a stupid way.

Being a kid of a Vietnam combat vet it looked like we finally figured it out after gulf war I. Kick the shit out of them. Take the shit you want/need and bail. All this Bush II bringing freedom to folks who couldn't give a shit is stupid.

The Romans did pretty well, as well as the Venetians. Kinda ran the known world for a while.
 
Wars in Africa tend not to go well for ANYONE. So the Italians get a break on that IMO lol

Went ok for Wavell and his 30,000 against the 130, 000 italians that surrendered to him.

The Italians also got their asses handed to them by the Greeks and the Albanians. So much so that the Germans had to delay their April invasion of the Soviet Union til late June to bail them out. The Germans coulda reached Moscow in late fall instead of December.
