Frank Sommerville

But who could forget Tori Cambell?

Sum ting wong
We tu lo
Ho lee fuk
Bang ding ow

She's da best!

I'm convinced there's far more to this story of Summerville, went thermonuclear too quickly.

Claudine is quite different in person- more mellow, talkable, engaging. I did a couple projects with her years ago.

There has been previous drama with him trying to own race issues as a white dude on behalf of his black daughter. It doesn't matter if your wife or daughter or whatever is black or Asian. As a white dude, you don't get to speak on their behalf. :dunno

In this case, as indicated in the link I posted above, he seemed to be super hyped up about unprofessional reporting and driving a lot of bad bias into the conversation.

He seems to be getting more and more interested in advocacy, rather than reporting. This of course is impossible since in order to be professional he should be unbiased and impartial in all reporting of news data.

American media is particularly bad at that professionalism, so I have to assume the lines he was trying to cross were also pet peeves of management, i.e. not the bias they were willing to accept

Ok- this had me spraying coffee on my monitor. Sooo very far back in the rear view mirror...

Meanwhile, Tucker Carlson still has his job after raising some white supremacist talking points.

Cmon, I cant be the only Rosemary fan here?

Of course you aren't. They burned Rosemary and got that weird Kylie whatever blonde gal from some outside market for their regular alternate of Bill Martin. And they just stuck her right on there without any explanation that I saw. No promos either. Stations used to do people promos about their talent, not so much anymore.

This was a betrayal to their grooming tradition. In fairness, Rosemary kind of looks sallow and possibly anorexic at times even though her figure is bomba-bomba.

Don't get me started on the Nubile sisters, Malou and the other one. Oh yeah. The other sister came first but went over to infomercials I think or something. What's kind of odd is that the Nubiles came in on the heels of the uncomfortable realization that some of our stations would pair a very white looking guy with a beautiful Asian gal, like some kind of sex fantasy wrought over the evening news. I can't remember his name, which proves my point, but for a while, one of the stations had the whitest man alive (Richard somebody probably a Canadian) paired with a good looking Asian gal and it always had this weird Suzy Wong vibe to me.

As far as Frank and his adopted daughter thing, Gary Radnich had a similar situation, I think with his black wife and their kids. I always felt Gary was pushing viewers to be more socially aware of traditional biases, but for all his cutting up, he didn't get in trouble for THAT, just other things. He was more subtle about it. I always felt like he was pushing people to see our local black athletes as beyond just their physical accomplishments because he knew of the racist assumptions and had his feet in both worlds. And he did great interviews in that vein, to me.

I almost wonder whether Frank just decided to go for it, because he's in trouble anyway and gambled that he'd get support in our local market. He basically said what at least some people are thinking. Wonder if he'll end up on KRON now....it;s the resting place of failed careers, when someone pushes for a fat new contract but doesn't get it.

I know we're swaying off topic, but how does Bill Martin still have a job? The guy can't form a sentence. He's hard to watch

Radnich was entertaining when Moby Dick was a guppy. He couldn’t adapt to the times and showed his age. I turned him off around 1998. But props to him for a long and financially rewarding career.

How about Dan “the Corpse” Ashley? Who has basically ganked Peter Jennings’ body language including the head tilting.

Bill Martin, who for years, has startlingly looked like he was a member of the Royal Family of England (we made Prince Charles jokes for years), is a Santa Cruz surfer and a great bro. If you ever have heard him get on the radio and riff with the sports guys, you'd like him. He is hilarious. I guess he competed in some senior games somewhere and his commentary was some of the best radio I have ever heard. He used to call a show every Friday afternoon, but I'll be darned if I can remember, it might have been with Tom Tolbert on KNBR before the Dubs moved over to FM.

But that gets back to Channel 2 and personality and loyalty. They have real people with personalities but have slowly moved a bit away from it. I always thought Frank was kind of a stiff tbh but I warmed up to him over the years. Like I said, who in the hell ever wears a three piece suit anymore anywhere?

Dan Ashley is a head case. His hair is approaching the Marie antoinette stage, all kind of froufy and powdery and his cheeks shine like nobody's business. His mannerisms are so frickin phony but are in context with Channel 7 going all the way back to Van Amburg and Happy Talk days. He also apparently has personal issues and spent a couple of weeks in a Walnut Creek hotel in some kind of bizarre episode. I made a joke earlier about him transitioning, but I can't figure out who he really is and I'm not sure he does either. He has become the ultimate empty suit of local news. I feel sorry for him even though I know he cashes larger checks than I ever will. He just seems lost.

The thing is, his stint on KRON after they lost the NBC contract was like performance art. It was so far beyond reporting the scores and his banter was just bizarre at time. He was really kind of critical and sarcastic yet keeping "in character" with a sports guy.

When you know its all bullshit anyway, it can be fun to watch somebody telegraph the same impression. But I know I am one of the few who defends or misses Radnich. I think he pissed off a ton of people all around here.

I think much of it speaks to the market diversity (by multiple measures). For all the money in play, you'd think the greedy bastids in NY would sit down and craft a "dream team" for news in the bay area. Get the secret sauce right and every other station would be talking to themselves- three times a day. I think the problem is that damn sauce's recipe is constantly changing.

Its a big ask of course and unlikely undoable. But since local channels merely parrot whatever is on the networks for 75% of the show, there's not much need to watch unless your nephew or niece got 15 seconds of air time. I sure don't tune in for weather or breaking news- that's online.

Yeah, I mean, clearly the unprofessional and biased Journalism happening in his outfit is typical of American news reporting though, right?

I still go back to the idea I have presented before of needing some sort of tax funded independent certification process to identify unbiased media sources.

We need a way to differentiate between News and "News Entertainment."

Fox News, an organization so Crackerjack they can’t even legally call themselves news in Canada :laughing

Don't forget that Tucker Carlson told the truth when he said he lies all the time to his viewers, but its only for entertainment.
