Napa County Struggles with Gang Problem

GangsNAPA, Calif. (KCBS) -- For a mostly rural county, Napa has developed a significant gang problem.Napa Police Chief Rich Melton says the county had two gang-related homicides last year, but before that, the last gang-related homicide was in 1998.

”Probably, if you looked at comparative data with other communities, you would see that we have a relatively low ratio of incidence of gang violence,” said Melton. “I think that what we want to do is to keep it that way.”

A new law enforcement report shows that are nearly 680 identified gang members in Napa County. The majority of gang activity occurs in the City of Napa. Chief Melton says law enforcement wants to combat the problem by instituting aggressive prevention and intervention strategies.

Melton says more resource officers are needed in schools, as children as young as 11 are being drawn into gangs in Napa County.

gangs in Napa?!?!?! WTF!?!?!?!?:wow:shocker

I wonder how they compare to the gangs in Pleasanton. I think they were called the p-town mafia.:laughing It was just a bunch of white kids who thought being ghetto was not wearing their blookers when they went yachting:rofl

I expect there are both mexican and salvadorean gangs and probably some of those Azns as well. Just like everywhere else. Except Burlingame, the gangs there live in Belmont

Its been a pretty signifigant problem in Napa since I was in middle school. Its Norte's and Sur's. Its isolated to just a handful of bad neighborhoods but its a big problem regardless.

When a town doubles its population in as short a time as Napa has and it goes from a nice quiet town to a place where gunshots ringing out is now not uncommon, its scary from the perspective of many lifetime residents. Myself included.

I love how you all assume that Napa is such a rich, yuppy town. Live here, its not quite like that. Its not a ghetto, but its not a bunch of barbie and kens runnin around. Its more a blue collar town with a fuckin yuppy price attached to everything. The tourists are the yuppies, not the locals. :hand

If you live anywhere in California and think your town doesn't have gangs, you aren't really aware of what is going on.

time to run for the hills. seriously though, shit is getting hectic in my neighborhood too. first my house robbed and this saturday someone tried to take my truck. they broke the door handle off and my ignition. thanks tweakers, like times aren't tough enough as it is.

time to start baiting them into my open garage with a motorcycle...oh and something special for that ass!

Where there's meth, there's crime. Where there's a rural county in California, there are meth labs. I'll go out on a limb and say there are a couple meth labs in the rural parts north of SF.

Does not have to be Rural.. There could be a lab in a gated community; next door to you in the garage.. Happened to my parents.. Fucking crazy man.. Fuck meth.

There have been labs found in quite densely populated parts of Napa, but for the real fun ya just hafta go about 35-40 miles north into Lake County, thems got the real deal meth labs. Thats a scary place.

I loved a recent trip on the wine train, where the first 20 min. was through a ghetto covered in gang graffiti. Nothing like quaffing old vine and trying to read tags.

Funny thing is, 90% of the violence isnt even anywhere near where the Wine Train goes, they just tag it as a big fuck you to the tourists. :laughing :laughing

Hahaha, yeah. So lame...the best part is, these gangs have myspace pages now, and I've read a couple news stories about violence that erupts over scathing comments left on the pages from rival gangs. MySpace eGang-banging....what's next?
