Getting car smogged. What is worst case scenario?

Also, I'm sick of flatbill douchebags romping around in their chargers and mustangs. Your straightpiped shitbox sounds like ass and is annoying AF.

The worst are the idiots in 6 cylinder mustangs, chargers, camaros, etc. Seriously, to an old gearhead like me, they look like dumases.

The Challenger/Camaro/Mustang rolling around on 22” wheels and a straight piped six cylinder offends me as a car guy. I know some people don’t want the speed and they just want the look. But damn. A muscle car without a V8...that don’t belong.

Just got back from smog place. Found one open on Sundays. Also offered DMV service for small extra charge. Everything AOK and have my new reg and sticker.

Exactly! :twofinger

Except doesn't every manufacturer sell more non-V8 versions than the V8 versions? :dunno

I drive a car that's old enough to vote and after 18 years of NY winters, the muffler rotted off a few months ago. The cat is still fine, but the bolts that the exhaust downpipe secures to are in similar bad shape - if I want to replace the muffler I'll be doing the cat as well.

I was genuinely shocked to learn that you don't even need a muffler to pass inspection here. I guess that's what 4 decades of California living will do to you

The muffler is not part of the smog control system. Sounds like the smog station was staying in their lane.

My old 86 Camaro's cat went side ways and blocked the flow to the point I
though the trany went south... I cut the cat and welded in free flowing pipe... I
looked up the rpm limits at CARB and machined a bullet that would slip over the
idle arm to gain that upper idle limit... I'd pull the rad fans fuse... then I would
wait out front of the smog station until the engine temp ticked 220ºF... quickly
I'd roll in for Smog check... it would pass by a whisker...

My 2002 Camaro failed because the post cat sensor was bad... after I removed
and replaced the sensor and ran up a 100 miles so the computer would reset it
passed without any extra antics on part with 107K on the clock... I still heat
(out of habit) the engine to operating temp... no cold engines...

Its not that I like defeating Smog rather I don't have anything stock because I
have a brain disorder called tinkerist... you'd be amazed at the mods here at the
BLS... take my Air Bike invention...

This is the caddie?

Ya - the CTS V6 I posted about in another thread. Zero to [***] audio:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jJToXCigFDyT4mshgr79JlK0tbMUGrEh/view

Some V12's sound like V6's, BTW:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDKlWuy9-yg

I think has to do with firing order.

1a 6b 5a 2b 3a 4b 6a 1b 2a 5b 4a 3b
vs
1-6-5-4-3-2

That is, the firing order on a V6 or V12 is basically also how you would torque something with bolts arranged in those patterns (outside in). V8's use different firing order (front to back). V8's also use 90 degree crank angle vs 60 degrees for V6 (and V12). Also guessing this is same reason that Honda V4's sound like V8's.

LOL, sorry for digression!!!

So you cut out the cat and the tech didn't notice that during the visual?

He did a visual. The cats are still there, as is the resonator. The only thing that I deleted are the mufflers.

Makes me happy when our agencies stay in own lane. My window tint is also several shades too dark, OMG!!!

I was posting about Little Busy Shop's comment, not your situation.

Ah - oops.

Yes - just now read previous post. I made sure my motor was hot as well. Some nice on-ramp redline pulls after it was already warm did the trick!!!

This is the only vehicle I have owned that I have not tinkered with. It's way too complicated, and I have an extended warranty I don't want to mess up.

You should totally be arrested...

Segue: Can anyone explain the dealio around tinting the windshield with limo dark tint?

... oh yeah, WHAT WOULD BUB RUB 'N LIL SIS DO?

W800 - So you have a K&N air filter that sits inside the stock air box, correct?
If you have the K&N Cold Air Intake system with the conical air filter like this one, and they passed it you got lucky!

There are CARB certified cold air intakes

It's not a smog device, but it is illegal to not have one.

Yeah, the first shop I went to this year wouldn't inspect me, because he told me they hated the cold air intake on my Challenger, so I sent it to Bill Ray Bob's SMOG Center, Swap Meet, and Hillbilly Jamboree Station and they passed me first time through without messing with the emissions reading.

Seems like if you have molested the lungs on your car, it is good to get access to a shop that ain't got no time for the visual.

Yes, although very limited to specific year, model, and engine.
For example: While this K&N Typhoon Cold Air Intake for the Cadillac CTS 3.0L/3.6L V6 (2012-2014) 69-4527TS does fit his car. The CARB Certification is for the 2012 Cadillac CTS 3.0L/3.6L V6 only. (CARB Exempt: Yes, CARB EO: D-269-49)

For the 2013 and 2014 models for the the same CAI, K&N states: "Not legal for use on this vehicle in California".

It's a very costly process for aftermarket companies to get their product "CARB"
approved for each new model year, particularly for low production models.
