So I got this jacket second hand and I'm not sure if it was because I was near a bbq when I checked the gear out but it smells like an ashtray.

Things I've tried so far:

Fabreeze
Leaving them out in the sun
wiping them down with a wet cloth
leather cleaner
tying them around a fan and letting it air out
drinking whiskey
lysol

none of these options had any major change on the jacket.

You could empty a few cans of Axe Body Spray on it?

Mmmmm an overdose of Axe and cigarette smell. How will I possibly keep the ladies off me!?!???

My stepmother had an old van restored that she left with some crusty old codger for several months who apparently smoked like a chimney. Her van came back smelling like his Camels. She had an ozone generator and tried it in the van (leather/fabric interior). She said in a couple of days the van smelled pretty decent again. I rode in it. If I really tried, I could pick up a whiff of cigarettes with the windows shut and the ventilation system going on recirc. She said it was almost unbearable when she first got it back and was ready to reupholster it before trying the ozone machine. She said that she tried the machine on other smells and it doesn't always work--but cigarettes it's great on.

Vinegar can be used to remove cigarette odors. One site recommends sponging on a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water, then leaving the item in the sun for a day to dry off and remove the odor of both vinegar and smoke.

I have not tried this.

I bought a dainese jacket used and it almost made me puke when i opened the box from the concentrated cigarette smell. I just kept hitting it with a combination of febreeze and watered down vinegar, as well as riding around with all the vents open. Eventually it all went away to my surprise. It did take a month or so and more cleaning sessions than I can count on my fingers though.

I have an old Dainese jacket that I bought new. It stinks now and I have to keep it in its own plastic storage container else it will stick up anything else stored with it. I don't smoke so its not that. A couple of other jackets I have are starting to give off an unpleasant order also.
Couldn't find a solution to unstink it so thinking of just throwing it out.

+1 on the ozone generator. Buy a used one on Craigslist/letgo/OfferUp for 40, throw it in some sort of box (away from living spaces, unless you and all animals will be out of the house for a while) and run the ozone generator for a couple of hours.

When you're done, sell it for the same price.

1. Drag behind your bike for about 1000 miles.
2. Pack in a vacuum sealed bag.
3. Fly to Hawaii and toss in a active volcano.
4. Fly home and take a uber to the D store and get one that
doesn't stink to high hell.

I got a two piece from ebay that showed up smelling like a chimney. It took 2-3 months, but the smell came out. I wiped it down a couple times, but I made sure to store it in the garage as opposed to a closet. Rode a few times to air out. Hopefully it just takes some time and fresh air.

Ozone is very effective because it goes where ever air can go. It is a powerful oxidizer that helps breakdown smoke molecules. The risk is it reacts with whatever it contacts so leather, rubber, plastic, etc. Use sparingly you should be okay. If the garment has rubber elastic stretch panels you may want to reconsider since rubber is particularly sensitive.
Maybe just get a nose plug to go with your ear plugs.

Whammy would toss it in a volcano too.
Great answers teh Barf:thumbup

Go camping and lay it downwind of the campfire.
It'll just smell like musky woodsman after!

This or try -

- Saddle soaping the entire jacket.
- Putting in a plastic bag and throw in a large freezer with baking soda. Keep overnight or longer.
- have a 6 hr bbq with the jacket downwind near the coals or wood stove.
