I guess it's legal but sure doesn't sound right.

Perhaps this kind of strategy is more common than I realize.

"Pearlie Jones has been a concession worker for 22 years. But the 63-year-old Daly City resident, who sells hot dogs at a ballpark stand, is frustrated that her wages haven't kept pace with the cost of living.

"The price of everything goes up every year at the ballpark. Food. Beer. But what we make stays the same," Jones said.

Earlier this year, rent at her Daly City apartment increased from $1,700 to $2,000 a month. Aside from her ballpark wages, she collects unemployment during the offseason.

"Between unemployment and what I'm making, I'm barely making it," Jones said."

To me, what is not right is that these whiny, spoiled sports players are getting 7 year contracts for $150 million dollars to play some fgt ass game. But the poor working stiffs are lucky to make $11,000 a year serving the fans. These ball players are out of control!! It makes me sick! They're all a bunch of greedy pricks. About due for a strike again claiming the $150 mil is not enough. :rolleyes

Who would pay $2000 to live in Daly City? I certainly hope that's for a 2-bedroom.

Also, yeah shit like this is pretty common. I knew some clowns up in Vail (the ski resort) who would file unemployment just because the season was over, and act like they couldn't find a job during the summer (even though nobody was forcing them to stay in Vail).

Ball park employment is a PART time job, not a ticket to the easy life. Did you ever work part time and expect full time benefits?

No never. You are right about that part. Have you ever worked a part time job and got paid 20 million a year? Who needs 20m a year? I couldn't spend that if I had to. It's just ridiculous. I bet the first million would go pretty fast but spending the whole 2nd million would take some real effort. Now you have 18m to go.

You are worth exactly what someone is willing to pay, and please don't be talking about what other people 'need'. It's anti-American and not for you to decide.

They should make it so the Boy Scouts or some non-profit group does the sales. Something to help them out. Selling hot dogs or beer for 3 hours a day a couple days a week is not a real job.

You are right that's why I don't attend...IMO they are not worth it.

Actually a pretty good idea.

And there you have it. A true free market system. Don't like something? Don't buy it or attend it. If enough people did this they wouldn't have $20mil/yr salaries. :thumbup

...and FYI, an athletes job is not part time. They need to continually work on their skills to be able to keep their job. You make it sound like they play a few hours of ball for a few months then enjoy the high life the rest of the time. If that were the case, they probably would not be making any bank at all :)

Actually this concept is what gave rise to the Unions and workers rights in this country. Leave the decision up to those who pay, and rarely will they ever pay fairly. Vendors in stadiums should be paid more. There is way too much money being made in MLB for more not to trickle down to them.

I know a couple of motorcycle mechanics back east that do that when it slows for the snow... a couple of years back one of them went to Austrailia & NZ for a couple of months while he was "unemployed".

An athletes job is no job at all. They get paid for what we try to squeeze in during our spare time. Playin ball, going to the gym, jogging, massage therapy. Sounds like a vacation to me.

Of course professional athletes have real jobs. Not to mention they are doing something at a level so high only a few thousand people in the world can acheive it. Does Valentino Rossi not have a job simply because "we" try to do what he does in our spare time?

What part of Free market do you not understand? I don't go to ball games and support those salaries, but if people want to go and pay that money, and support those salaries, why should the players not take the money?

Who needs $50k a year? You can "live" on half that. The ball park workers are PART TIME unskilled labor. What in the world justifies paying them more than the already very good money they get?

Using that train of thought, secretaries who work for Goldman Sachs should get paid more, as well as janitors and shoe shine folks. Who are you to say how private industry should allocate their money? The communist party secretary? :laughing

Have you ever seen a pro train? Or played a sport with one? I suspect you would not be saying that if you had.

It's just my opinion. Of course technically "it's a job" do you all really think they deserve to make that much money?

do you go to many sports games at all?

People pay money to go to a game to see their team WIN. Winning takes good players. Good players can command their own salary due to their demand. Therefore, they make good money.

Want to see what happens to a team that doesn't pay well? Look up the Florida Marlins...or if that is too far away...the Oakland A's :laughing (runs from MikeV)

How much per hour do you think they should be paid to sell hot dogs?

$25/hr? $30/hr?

$10.25 for a 12oz beer not high enough?
