going naked? will this bike be successful in the US

too expensive/ugly for the US market...

only the exclusive few can afford...

sounds like what folks said about the Multistrada 1200 when it was released, and it's been a roaring success. BMW S1000RR is ugly too, and north of 16k.

the tepid response of the US market to naked bikes is a more valid concern.

My local dealer won't carry the street bikes ( other that the adventure) as KTM requires them to order a certain number of each bike and attend a "street school". Doesn't. Make it worth it for the dealer to sell 3 or 5 bikes that would likely be sold at a deep discount.

They'll sell no more than a handful. It's not 2007 any more... the days of easy money are long gone and buyers want practical real world bikes.

this thing is total overkill... expensive, shitty mileage and a huge amount of useless power that the computer won't let you tap anyhow (otherwise the bike would be unridable)

the new Duke and the 390 look much more interesting

Define success. A few people owning one in the Bay Area doesn't really make big success.

First model year of the new Ktm 1290 should be virtually free of defects. :rolleyes

Definite sensory candy for sure.

Oh, yeah!

If its anything like their dirtbikes where you have to fix a dozen things out of the box before its ready for use, I'll just buy something else. And hope that someone lets me ride theirs :teeth

I love my 08 Superduke. The fact that you don't see many of them is part of the appeal and will be with the new one too. Definitely niche and sales numbers will reflect...

Any chance your 08 Superduke didn't cost what this bike will.

And Your 08 isn't suppressed with all the cut the power, Traction control, anti wheelie control, features that leave new bike owners asking...what happened to the power? They used to have power.

Agreed.

The negative comments have me scratching my head. I owned a 2001 KTM Duke II, still own a 2002 KTM 200EXC and now I own a 2007 KTM Super Duke. All have been phenomenal bikes... fit and finish, ease of maintenance and superior performance. I've never had one reliability issue with any KTM I've owned.

My Super Duke? Most fun I've ever had on the street. I'm thinking about leaving the GSXR at home when I go to Sonoma and using the SD instead.

I've owned two recent KTMs, a 625 SMC and I have a new 350 EXC-F converted to Supermoto (adventure-moto really 19/17 inch wheels). Anyway the 625 was a paint shaker of an engine, the 350, sweet as a nut. My buddies with 990SMTs complain about the vibes also. I don't believe the older twins were counter balanced at all. KTM is close to making some really great bikes on a consistent basis but so far they are a bit hit and miss.

I love my naked Streetfighter. This looks like a KTM copy-cat. Better late than never :|

Looks better than the older SuperDuke to me. While my dad's is a lot of fun to ride, I don't think they're very pretty.

Success in the moto market means a dealer can charge full retail and still have people lined up to buy one.

Success: R1200GS

Other than reliability issues the R1200GS does everything right. It is a superb road bike, practical, decent off road, comfortable.
