I'm going to go out on a limb here and trash-talk that Disturbed video, and a lot (The majority?) of modern metal along with it.
I freaking hate the self-important pomposity of so much of the genre. Freaking ditch the orchestration, the cathedral echo vocal effects, all that shit and maybe, just maybe, I'll come back to the table.
A lot of the musicians working in the metal category are amazing- don't get me wrong. Some of the best guitarists, drummers, and yes, vocalists perform metal.
But JFC, power ballads can kiss my hairy butt. Any goddamn track that has swelling string sections (or synthesized simulacra of such) leading to an emotional crescendo is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me.
It's the lowest form of pop music- the kind that tries to disguise what it is. The bands doing this try to seem edgier nowadays, but it's all just Night Ranger over again.
(I'm willing to rant about delusions of operatic grandiosity in the same genre, but that's slightly different).
