I love doing good deeds, I like to think most of us do.

Do you think the good deed loses a little something if you run around telling everyone what you did?

well, yah I guess a little bit but it depends. because the person is parlaying their good deed into attention, sympathy, etc. but if that person uses it in a context that may inspire others to follow suit, then it may actually enhance the good deed in a positive mojo sort of way. such as "dude, I'm your buddy and all but I just spent half a day cleaning the beaches of cig butts and trash. I'd appreciate it if you would dispose of your trash properly." or summat. if it inspires the friend to be a little more cleanly and respect the earth a bit more...then :thumbup.

Thanks for the Suomi Visor Dove! It was even more than I expected.

:thumbup

Also LittleBeast really helped with our diabetic dog! It was such an awesome gesture sometimes I feel that just saying thankyou is a pathetic attempt at showing appreciation.

Well said. :applause

I agree it cheapens the good deed if you run around bragging about what a great person you are and "look at me! look at me!" But letting people know in such a way as to be humble and inspiring at the same time is A-OK in my book. :thumbup

Exactly! :kiss

For an example, my company gives us a day off as a department to help out in our community. I took pics and sent a broadcast email showing what we did, hoping to get others involved and helping out. It worked! I got a lot of emails wanting to help out next month and even some interesting in going this month. You never know what your good deed will bring to others.

I think most people talk about their deeds to get others to do the same, not to brag. If you are the type of person that does good deeds in the first place it usually means you are not the type to be a braggart or arrogant about what you do.

I held a fart the other day while I was waiting in line for coffee, and I did not say anything, though I know the gratitude would have been real. Also I stopped at a pedestrian crosswalk while driving, and opened a door for a grandma who was kinda hot and wearing shorts. No applause please. I do good deeds like this every day.

I try to keep it on the down-low, lest I blow my cover as a dick.

Rest assured, your blown dick will not be covered. Err, wait. I think I have that wrong...

The intention of the good deed is the issue here. Did you do it because you were/are a good person? Or because you wanted attention from the action?

If you go around advertising what you did, then it makes it into a good deed for your ego/image and not for people in need.

Agreed. Seems like IF you can avoid the understandable desire to broadcast, it is the sign of a truly good deed.

Might be better for your sense of self-worth in the long run, knowing that you are secure enough not to need a pat on the back.

Anyone read "Don't sweat the small stuff, and it's all small stuff?" Great book, and this is one of its lessons (to avoid the need to broadcast good deeds).

Good deeds are like orgasms. They feel great at the time, they don't usually last very long, and when you've finished, nobody really cares about it but you.

And maybe the recipient of said good deed...
