Hey..

A bunch of us are riding to Laguna on Thurs/Fri for the whole race weekend (Campin'). Does anyone know of some good twisties in the area there? Searched, but all that comes up are rides TO laguna.

Via googlemaps there look like a few good possibilities (rancho san carlos, robinson canyon?) but wanted to know if anyone had experience riding in the area.

Thanks :thumbup

Terrible weekend to ride around Monterey. Cops are everywhere and are not at all shy. Go down by Carmel.

there are lots of great roads around the monterey area. try carmel valley road. you can take it out to arroyo seco. highway 1 obvisouly. 68 from 1 to pacific grove its very short tough. you can lengthen it by doing aguajito to 68 west. still very short. there are lots of great little roads off of aguajito. they run around jack's peak. you can also go out towards river road and soledad area. los lorales grade. seriously its not that hard to find good roads they are all very short though for the most part.

do yourself a favor. MotoGP weekend has 10,000 guys on motos in the Mobay area and the cops are LOOKING for excuses to ticket.

No matter where you go the traffic will be heavy and the chances or riding sportily non existent.

the only fun twisty ride is Hiway one to Big Sur, and it will be crowded with tourists.

Are there any bad rides up in that area? I don't think so.
You mean, down in that area, don't you? :teeth

As da' boys stated, there will be CHP all over da' place. And da' coast is da' boring on the weekends, because of excessive traffic. I would head toward highway 25, if you have enough time. Get away from the MotoGP, weekend madness. Otherwise, you can just pick any road and cruise. Bring a Garmin or other GPS to find your way back.

From Salinas go over San Juan Grade rd,after you get over the grade go up Fremont Peak to the top.Super tight goaty riding and there shouldn't be much traffic.:thumbup

Carmel Valley Rd. is right there. That might be too close, but..I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't too close.

Big Sur to Hwy 1 down to Ragged Point is a nice 150 or so mile ride (from Monterey). You can stop in Ragged Point for a break and to eat, gas up and go again. It's a very scenic route with plenty of places to stop along the way.

Cops will be EVERYWHERE and will pull ANYONE over on two wheels that they can. May not be the best canyon speed demon trip, but if speed isn't a big thing for you and you can keep it close to the speed limit, it's a beautiful ride for sure.

Looks like he's located in SoCal...Monterey would be UP for him :laughing

Carmel Valley Rd is always fun, watch out for weekend traffic and CHP,they will patrol it on race weekend.
Oh yea,and vultures,hit one once on that road,not fun.:teeth

That's in my neck of the woods; +1 on Carmel Valley Road and San Juan Grade Road. CV is long and twisty, SJG is shortish, twisty, and goaty; both are hella fun!

The enforcement aspect is definitely not over-emphasized- make sure your moto and papers are in order, and don't flout traffic laws, or most likely you will earn some sort of recognition from the LEOs.

No, I don't.

I even put a smilie on this thing. Let me explain the sarcasm:
(Russ's profile says SoCal).
BARF is the "Bay Area Riders Forum". Not the "Burbank Airhead Riders Forum". Nor the "Bernardino Active Riding Fudgepackers".

Thus, for THIS forum, DOWN is the appropriate direction, not UP. Just because russ69 lives south of Los Olivos, doesn't mean that EVERYONE else in THE BAY AREA should adjust to his center of the universe and say they are going UP to see the Swedes in Solvang.

Dang this interweb socializing gets complicated. :rolleyes

Watch for him on Nashua Rd./Morales Rd.

He was there in 2005. Don't know about 2006, as I missed out on the whole thing. 2007-2009, though, he was there. Just south of Moss Landing if you're on Highway 1, on the overpass just past where Highway 156 ends at Highway 1, the road goes from 2 lanes (156) or 1 lane (Highway 1) to three lanes. Fantastic opportunities to get past the lazy-assed RV drivers clogging up the ride to MotoGP.
His LIDAR is active and hot. His eagerly awaiting co-workers are parked on the onramp just past the overpass on BMW R1150RT-P's and R1200RT-P's waiting to launch.

As informed and now well-behaved observers of the speed limit, you will be able to observe the catch along both shoulders (some folks just don't have a clue) of those the LIDAR confirmed as expressing too much exuberance.
No need to wave at him. Unless, of course, he's run out of co-workers on the onramp.

Down Carmel Valley Road, over to the coast on Naciemento-Fergussen, up on 1. I've left out a few roads inbetween but you can figure it out. But.....you must have current registration, current license, and current proof of insurance to get through Fort Hunter Liggett. Expect small delay while paperwork is checked.

Good choice especially advice about paper checking at the Hunter Liggett gate. To get to the best part of Carmel Valley road, take Laureles grade road from the entrace to Laguna Seca; when you intersect with C.V. rd. turn left.

Heed everyone's advice and use extreme caution if you ride during race weekend.

Police will pull groups of riders over at random and inspect everyone's bikes for violations (missing reflectors, broken turn signals, aftermarket license plate holders, failure to put a cover sheet on your TPS reports, etc.) so don't think that just because you're riding under the speed limit you'll be spared.

Don't say we didn't warn ya!

not to flog a dead horse, but there's no possibility to ride in a sporting way that weekend. the cops are so freaking enthusiastic during motogp. you will lose. there's plenty to do and see that weekend with your kickstand down.
