Green Sticker to Street Legal; Street legal dirtbike

I'm considering dual sporting my XR100, I read through most of this thread, anyone else have RECENT luck plating a green stickered bike? I 'think' I can do it, I'm just saving up for the Baja Designs kit, which is crazy expensive!

To those who have dual registered - do you end up with two titles? One for the green sticker, one for the plate?

Yes, but you don't need to keep both. you can drop your green sticker title or your street title at any time through DMV to save a buck if you want to.
I have keep both on my 2 dual registered bikes just because I can and so I don't need to run lights, mirror esc. when off road.

the ohv parks dont get any money to pay for up keep if you drop the green sticker, so if you're a user of the parks, its good of you to dual-register

and.. its not a title change, its just a registration type change

you can use the plated bike at an ohv park with out lights/ mirrors etc. They'll still let you in just fine. Thats the messed up part: street bikes can use OHV parks but no money is available from the state for maintanance, but dirt bikes cant use the street... well... only if you get caught you cant... ;)

2003 KTM 450EXC originally purchased in California, had Ca. dual registration. Owner moved out of state, registered there dual sport he has street plate and off road plate. I bought bike tried to dual register here's my story. Not gonna name DMV office in case they read BARF
Went to #1 DMV, had all of KTM paperwork(out of state reg, plates, current registration, past Ca. registration, title, original bill of sale of bike in california) Filled out "Application for Title or Registration" .
I was at DMV earleir to renew my drivers license, they said fill out "Reg 343" pull in lane and ring bell. I came back to #1 DMV with bike in trailer, lady came out and said for me to unload bike safety reason they cannot go in trailer. 30 minutes later gentleman came out and checked bike, he asked for title, checked vin# he told me that the bike did not have turn signals, and showed me where rear signals would mount, he said he can still do the registration but he must inform me that i might have issues if I get stopped without turn signals.Everythig was goin fine, until he saw a piece of sticker next to vin# that states "something something that this vehicle does not conform to federal motor vehicle safety standards and operation on public streets, roads and highway is illegal." it didn't have the bike vin#it just has manufactured date and motorcycle type. He said sorry this bike cannot be registered cause its for off road only and cannot be operated on public road.
I said it had a california registration and plates, and it also has current out of state plates/registration as street legal. He wouldn't listen and added to vehicle verification notes that it does not conform/pass "federal motorcycle safety standards" He said to go inside and work out the details there. He gave me back the vehicle verification. So it would have been perfect if that damn off road only sticker, wasn't there, it was a label not an official KTM sticker with vin#it was peeling off and can barely read. I said sure and headed to DMV #2.
Get to DMV#2 that sticker that was peeling off earleir well I guess it flew off on the freeway when I arrived @DMV#2. Got in line for vehicle verification, unloaded the bike, friendly lady asked for title and checked out vin#'s. She found the vin# and then looked at the motor vin#...Great everything was going well. Bammmm she was asking me if there was another sticker that had the vin# on it. I said I didn't know there was another sticker with vin#. She asked if I had owners manual I said not on me, she would not ok verification cause she was bent on locating that other vin#. I showed her the sticker that flew off earlier that magically appeared she said no that's not it. It would have the vin# in the sticker. She cannot pass it and said I would need to go to CHP for vehicle verification. I said why when it was already registered in california and currently registered in so and so state. She wouldn't budge. She gives me Hayward CHP number to make appointment. I go inside get assigned a number and spend another couple of hours waiting. I show DMV tech title, and current registration and previous Ca. registration. She says that will be $113 for registration till next year. I pay her the money and tell her that i would like to get off road registration also, she says, just wait for CHP verification and then I can pay green sticker. Also when i come back to DMV with CHP verification she will issue Ca plates. She give me temporary operating permit to ride in public road that's good till 11/30/09 and registration receipt for $113.
CHP verification center are all booked till Dec 09 or they are not doing it anymore cause of budget cuts. I called Hayward, Oakland, Dublin and Fremont. Great...I get home and look in manual. KTM Manual states that there are only 2 location on bike that has vin/serial # the 2 location I showed DMV inspector. I called DMV wait 1.5hrs on phone spoke to someone i tell her my story about the DMV inspector is looking for 3rd sticker with vin# , my owners/repair manual clearly states there are only 2 location on this year/model bike. I ask her do i have justification to go back to DMV and plead my case, or am i just wasting my time? She said go back and ask to see a supervisor/manager. Thats where I am at. Spent the whole day at DMV.
Im heading back 8am to same DMV inspector with my owners/repair manual and show her that only 2 location on bike. If that doesn't work I will speak to supervisor/manager and plead my case. Of course I will have to try to be in my nicest behavior and understanding ,hopefully keep my composure.
Any tips, advice is highly appreciated i'll be checking on my Blackberry while waiting in line at DMV.

never seen a MC with 3 VINs-- always been one on the frame and one on the engine...

My 01gsxr600 has the vin on the engine, sticker/plate on left side of frame, and stamped onto the front/right of the frame. Can post pics tomorrow if it may help.

I think they will give you the plate once you show them in the book that your bike only has 2 VIN locations. I live in Livermore and called the LPD to ask how to get a VIN verification and they sent a community service person to my house within 15 min. I didn't even need to unload the bike from my truck I just pointed to the VIN number on the frame. He filled out all the paperwork and handed it to me. So if you get jerked around again with the VIN verification you can PM me and I'll try and hook you up through the Livermore Police Department.

Wasted morning. DMV wont budge. They were looking for a federal sticker that was not anywhere on bike. Funny as I mentioned this was originally a California registered bike, they won't even listen SO I have to schedule with CHP for vehicle verification. I argue that all CHP that I called from Fremont-Dublin were not staffed, booked till next year or call back for a cancelation.I asked for an extension cause the temp operating permit expires 11/30 there as no way I can get to CHP, she understood and said for me o come back cause they don;t have the 12(December) temp permit. Another trip to DMV.
I am dredging going to CHP cause now I gotta spend money to get blinkers. 2003 KTM street legal didnt have turn signals go figure. Anyone know of cheap cheap way to add signals .

They are looking for federal sticker that I couldn't find, I understand they need to make sure vehicle wasn't stolen etc: So only CHP can verify if vehicle is stolen? Local PD cannot ?

Anyone with some words of wisdom?

Is it the emissions sticker they're looking for?

I don't know if there's a 'used to be registered in CA' exemption for the 'must have 7500+ miles or CA emissions sticker to have registration moved from other-state to CA' bit.

I tried that route, I showed them old California registration, which showed it was registered in California. Showed original invoice of purchase agreement bill of sale when purchased at Modesto KTM

All she said was that I needed a federal sticker with vn# on it. Go to CHP for verification.

Ja, that's what I meant - I'm wondering if this is less a 'green sticker to street legal' issue and more of a 'register non-50-state out-of-state bike in CA' issue. The original CA plate notwithstanding, the reg out-of-state brings it back under scrutiny.

DMV Kiss my mothe%^^^cking ass...........I'm not generalizing DMV employees just the 4 DMV offices that I have visited in the last 3 days with hours spent in line, waiting and been dissapointed with. Each one gave me a different process. Half the folks dont know what the hell they are doing or understand the process. After 3 days of going to DMV and getting run around, looked up some friends and some of their friends. Went to DMV with same paperwork and in 30 minutes got my California plates. Waiting for title to arrive so I can dual register.
Yah baby.
Word of advice, the process is complicated but once you figure it out its simple. Remember this simple rule, they will spit out the policy , they cannot tell you or show you how to circumnavigate the system but the way is easy if you look around. DMV runs on paperwork so if you figure out that out , it will save you alot of time. Completed paperwork, every "I's" dotted and every "T's" crossed. They cannot process you unless the paperwork is completely filled out. Figure that out and its all simple. DMV wants to take your money, they just have to make sure all the paperwork are in order to cover their ass. They don't care if the bike was formerly plated in Ca. plated in Idaho then brought back to California. Don't personalize the process, DMV technicians are overworked and understaffed, they just want to make it through the day, your just a number. They cannot make decisions. The DMV technicians are on quota system they have to process so much a day. Find the paperwork that needs to be processed , then ask around who can fill the pertinent information, they are looking for . Fill out the forms, pay the dues and don't ask unnecessary question that will raise red flags. If they tell you the form is not completed correctly ask what or how to fill it out. Get a new form and make sure you complete it correctly. Go to different DMV if possible.

BTW I didn't take it to CHP for inspection,I did not take it to any LEO agency for inspection, no one ever looked at odometer, never even had to turn the bike on. Knowing what i know now I could have gotten plates on initial visit.

So is it still possible to plate a Honda crf 50? sorry if a stupid question i just got hooked, looking at everyone else with their minis!

I got a plate for my 05 Honda 450X. I asked for dual registration three times until the clerk got mad and ended up with just a street license plate. Only having a street plate will work for me. Cheaper registration for just street only. Very happy to get the plate!:ride Any questions please PM me.
