Had a dumb mistake

ur on a ninja 250, i think its time to move on to a bike that doesnt run a choke. at least thats what ive read. that is of course if youve had it for at LEAST 3 months AND 1000 miles

Should I move on too? My R6 gets choked every morning.. :|
 
meh, ive done this plenty of times. it happens no biggy. especially when i first startd riding.
 
When is the last time you changed your spark plugs and air filter? It shouldn't need to rev that high to keep running.

Iiiiinteresting. I'm coming up on a maintenance milestone so I'll be sure to check this phenomenon after I'm done. I've got an '06 too though and it behaves much the same. Could it be the bike?
 
Procedure for my Kawasaki ZRX:
Turn choke on, but a little less than half-way.
Put kickstand up.
Turn on key.
Pull in clutch.
Hit starter. If it doesn't start, add a bit more choke. Just has to be enough for it to start.

At that point I would drive out of my driveway, pull onto the road, and flick the choke off. Never bothered using the choke for anything more than starting the bike.

One of my riding partners has an '06 Ninjette; freshly-tuned, new plugs, everything to spec, and it still needs a ton of choke until it's completely warmed up.

All my previous experience told me that she was running too much choke. Then I tried it myself and found that there is a reason those motos have such a rep for being very cold-blooded. When I backed the choke off to a "reasonable" level, *cough* *cough* die...

Wow, this reminded me of that first morning on the course at the MSF...15 years ago. Yeah, those little bikes were really cold blooded, took 5 minutes before the throttle could be touched without killing it.

This morning I found my choke on still a bit when I got to work... :laughing
 
haha! reminds me of when i jetted my drz.
the throttle cable was a bit tight when i refitted the carb.
it took me too long to figure out why my bike was idling at fuckin 6k or something lol.
 
aha dont worry man...did that before...once my bike died and i had to push start it by myself...put the choke on and push-started it and damn...while it was revving high by itself, i thought it was gonna blow...

Don't feel bad, when I first started riding and bought a brand new bike, I did something just as bad, if not worst. I was riding on the freeway and noticed all of a sudden my bike just lost power. I had to pull off to the side of the road while losing speed and managing not to get ran over. This happened to me three times (imagine my frustration of thinking there's something wrong with my brand new bike)..... before I finally realized I was hitting the freakin kill switch. :nerd
 
Freakin' cold blooded beast. Mine was fine at sea level, but being up at altitude, the little guy takes so long. Tigger doesn't even start on full choke, and when it does, I have to play the idle at full blast to keep it running (and yup, I've had everything replaced and done that I could think of for the little guy. 3 services in the last few months at different shops). Even at the first few stop lights, I don't let it go under 3000. But once it warms up, it's back to almost-normal. :)

... I wish we had the FI Ninjettes here. :laughing

Especially since the air filter and plugs shouldn't need replacing at only 2,000 miles (what I bought it at)

A little carb tuning will probably rectify the cold bloodedness. i havent worked on a 250 but most modern carburated bikes have plugs in a small well on the bottom of the carb. remove the plug and richen up the mixture a bit. there are probably some jet kits available also that would boost the performance a litttle and cure the cold bloodedness.

My Aprilia 1k rsv-r 2003 had a choke. Maybe I should move up to a bike without one?
 
I've lost a valve in my engine. = pretty dumb

Tried making an electromagnet to get it out = rrrrreally dumb

These are just a couple of highlights from my brief and illustrious career regarding dumb things in, on, and around motorcycles.
