I have always had carpet on top of my (Redwood) hardwood Floors. I have owned my house for 40 years and I have replaced the carpet several times due to damage from my pets and normal wear and tear. The cost of carpet has gone waaaay up and the quality is really poor. The last time I replaced my carpet, it costs 400% more than the previous replacement, and the carpet looked like crap in less than 2 years.

We just lost a senior dog, and we have a new puppy. Suffice to say, our carpets looks terrible. Our puppy is 98% potty trained, so we are trying to decide what to replace this carpet with; get our Hardwood floors refinished, buy, Laminate or more Carpet?

Any suggestions?

I am a big fan of the laminate. Dogs are good with it. Easy to clean etc. The only downside vs carpet is the sound absorbtion, but throw rugs do help.

Good luck lefty.

In my last house and in my current house, laminate in all hallways and carpet in all rooms except the kitchen. I like it that way.

I would guess that refinishing what's already there would be the cheapest and easiest.

I have oak throughout my home with a few area rugs scattered here and there. Worked fine and looked good through two beagles.

And a big no on wall to wall carpet.

Just to add some additional info.
My home is all laminate with throw rugs here and there and tile in the restrooms.

My old home was tile/carpet and hardwood. The dogs did work the hardwood pretty good and refinishing every 5 years to keep it wife happy just did not make sense for us. The laminate is pretty bullet proof and a box of extra has us covered unless it is some big disaster.

While I like carpet I found having the laminate in the living rooms, dining room etc. is what a LOT of the new homes are getting so it is current design wise with brand new builds.

with pets i'd go with "luxury vinyl" which is nearly indistinguishable from whatever material you want it to be. hardwood, tile etc. it's also effectively waterproof when you or the dogs get it wet. cost is probably a little more than having existing hardwood refinished but you also don't have to empty the house/rooms for days while the refinishing process happens... well fewer days anyway

Yeah laminate has come a long way inclusive of waterproofing and sound dampening and whatever the hell look you want. Forget carpet (especially with pets).

I had to make this decision a few years back. Laminate made the most sense at the time for cost vs durability.
What I discovered since though is that laminate stains easily. I squirted rubbing alcohol on a spider once and it stained that spot for over a year. I don’t recall that happening with the hardwood that I had replaced.

I replaced my 25 year old laminate flooring with luxury vinyl a couple years ago. We've already damaged it in a several places. I'll be lucky to get another or two years out of it. I will go back to laminate at that time.

dude. if you have redwood floors i would refinish those. i bet they are stunning.

Those floors are long gone. That was for the home I remodeled to sell. Laminate was the deal.

20 years ago, I had 1 room resurfaced and it was beautiful. I have been told that it will show the dogs scratches easier than the new laminate flooring. PS- pit Bulls are way more destructive than Beagles. FYI.

To punctuate this a bit, redwood is not a hardwood. Any wear and tear like you’re describing would be quite a bit worse with redwood.

True. Redwood is a soft wood.

We hav oak in our home and we never noticed scratches in the floor.

Also, keep your dogs nails trimmed.

Carpets are dirty, as are dogs. Too bad the natural floor doesn't work for you.
