I would like to take a class and I was wondering if anyone has ever taken lessons. What should I look for and what is the going rate? Just thought I would throw it out there :)

College of San Mateo has a great program but it's a little far for you.

There are tons of places in SF. Just search it out.

Funny, my G/F asked me the same question this afternoon but even though I have the gear and the training she won't let me teach her.

It must be my awesome skillz :D

I've been certified in cyclone... :teeth

Took a fencing class in like 1985. I sucked and took up archery instead. :laughing

Wow, speaking of fencing....gold medal!

I took both fencing AND archery in college... won my match in fencing, won a trophy in archery. I was the only girl shooting a compound with enough poundage for hunting... :laughing
Hmm... guess I just liked the weapons classes in PE... :teeth
Would seriously like to take some fencing classes again... it was fun!

usfa.org has a list of clubs.

I've taken fencing lessons. If you can take it at a local junior college, it'll be much cheaper. Private schools tend to offer package deals.

As a female I opted for chest armor, which is a hard (lexan?) breast plate based on bra size. You're going to want one if you get serious, as fencing requires taking hits from your opponent after you've done all your sticking into him/her. :) Pain is relative. Still I cannot imagine that most females want to have their breasts/chests stuck lots of times on a regular basis by people who are just a tad enthusiastic about giving you the point. If you know what I mean. :)

Most schools provide fencing masks. They can get really icky after a while. You'll also want to get your own foil; at least, one that fits your hand and gives good weight, as well as a decent glove. Again, if you get serious, consider getting your own jacket. Otherwise most schools provide them too.

Used to fence a long ass time ago. Look for teachers that are guiding their students through exercises and not abusing them with the weapon like so many are wont to do. There's a fencing club across the street from me in Mountain View on Rengstorff a block south of Costco/KK/InnOut. They had some signs up a few months ago advertising their beginner class for like $80 I think. I know their primary school is in San Jose somewhere.

Ms. Darling,

Us Barf peeps seem to forget, while calling out local-to-the-SF-bay-area items of interest, that you call a more southerly locale home.

(nothing further to add to the fencing dialog except that kendo - japanese sword marshal arts - is pretty cool too.

Also, glad to see you changed your avatar back to your smiling face. I like that one best.

cheers,

Thank you all for the responses and links! As for putting up fences, I can manage that kind of fencing thank you :laughing I've got scars on my arms when barbed wire slipped from putting up fencing around my father's horse ranch back in high school but thank you!! :laughing

I think I am in love with at least 3 barfettes. You girls are so awesome!!

^^:love ^^ :)I actually go hunting with my bow. My bro and I are into it. I hunt turkey with it. I saw the women sweep the fencing and thought that would be so much fun to learn.

:thumbup that's sweet.

My compound bow has an 85lb draw and I'm the only one that can use it. I've hunted with it but haven't made a kill yet.

That really was a cool sweep in fencing :D

Cheers GG ;)
