Has CHP deployed the Ford Interceptor SUV's yet?

Getting outfitted in sac now, should be out soon. I think they put a few out for the Amgen tour

Thanks Alex.

Let this thread be a good spot to post pics to once they are spotted!

I've driven a couple of them. They're pretty sweet. :)

SUV Interceptor? Not sure if those two words belong together without including "rollover".

I disagree. Sure, the cabin roof is higher, as is occupant seat height- but the bulk of the CG is still much lower. Unless you have some CG data points, I ain't buying the thinking.

I'm not sure those two words belong together regardless of rollover potential or not. SUVs have a place in LE for certain, but I'm not sure "Intercepting" is one of them. Time will tell I guess.

The SUV will smoke a Crown Vic. :dunno

Any reason for the Caprice over the Taurus? er...Interceptor car? :teeth

I haven't a clue. They let us look and sit in the demo cars and encourage suggestions, but its some guy in an office that makes fleet decisions.

Shame. You guys should've been able to take them out on a demo...get a feel for them.

Well, there were quite a few different versions of the Crown Vic over the years that LE agencies have utilized them, so it's hard to make a blanket statement like that. I've ridden in some Crown Vic Interceptors that were pretty damn fast with documented tops speeds in excess of 140 MPH. From the article, they aren't even going to use the twin turbo EcoBoost V-6 but rather a slightly higher horsepower model than the standard V-6 Explorer, but I do know this, add 1,000 pounds of LE equipment to an already lumbering and heavy SUV making slightly more HP is not a recipe for "smoking" a Crown Vic.

Except that it does. P71's didn't have any more power than a standard Vic. They did however have a lot more weight. And like I said, the data and the demos support the SUV's superior performance.

We're ordering some Caprices in the fall. We demoed the Ford, Chevy, and Dodge and everyone said they liked the Caprices best.

My personal opinion is that Ford blew it by not offering a V8/RWD option. I bleed Ford blue, but I'm truly disappointed with the Taurus offering. I can imagine that the maintenance intervals on the twin-turbo V6/AWD will be much higher than a standard V8/RWD platform. Not to mention that many smaller departments with limited budgets won't be able to afford that option and may even opt for the V6/FWD, which has no place in LE, in my opinion.

The Caprice is also a longer vehicle vehicle compared to the current CVPI. I'm excited about this because I'm 6'4" and stuffing my big ass in a CV with a full cage KILLS my back after about 3 hours.
