Helicopter insurance

Reading the replies I decided to check my Anthem BC PPO insurance coverage.

1. I'm mildly surprised air ambulance is covered at all

I have called multiple times to confirm and customer service gets confused, promise they'll call me back, and never do.

AAA Premium has airborn whambulance coverage... It's not widely know.

PRE-AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED! Did not know Emergency Medical Transport ($25,000 per year max) was included. I was happy just for the towing and DMV services alone. For tow I get up to four per year: three @100 max and one @ 200 mile max.

I feel better knowing I have AirMedCare + AAA + medical

For Enloe, is that mostly for you guys who ride track out that way?

It's Emergency Medical Transportation....

...and must be arranged and authorized in advance.

There's the catch. It must be both, emergency AND preauthorized.

"Yes, AAA? I've just broken my back and need an ambulance to the hospital. Can I please get preauthorized for the air ambulance?"

No? I didn't call with enough notice? Ok, thanks for trying. I'll try to call mid-crash next time, thanks! Welp, guess I broke my back AND my bank.:ride"

Thunderhill is covered by Chico, only if they're unable will a secondary service be allowed to fly you out. The folks selling this service at TH do not share this bit of important info and sing people up like they're the first responders.

Which supplemental insurance program covers Chico?

It's Emergency Medical Transportation, not necessarily a whirly ride. Must be at least 100 miles away (and possibly overnight stay required with some AAA memberships), looks and smells more like secondary insurance, and must be arranged and authorized in advance.

Sounds like you're correct! Thanks for posting the link:
Conditions of Coverage

"Eligible Member, the Covered Traveler, or their representative must contact Us and We must make all transportation arrangements in advance. We will not pay for any of the services listed in this section if We did not authorize and arrange it." Adding AAA on speed dial :thumbdown

This sounds like non-emergent coverage, where you are stable and admitted somewhere and want to get home in a few days. There's not a chance in hell first responders are going to even pause calling a helicopter if that's the best means on-scene and there is no EMS dispatch process to obtain such "permission".

CALSTAR offers a non-emergent program as well, contact Tracy* for details.

So are you saying you have the right to fly folks from anywhere in those states to a hospital without the local or other companies having the first right of refusal?
