Helmet camera legality?

Hmm, what about the helmets with a spoiler on the rear for aerodynamic reasons? They’re more than 5mm.

I use a chin mount with a GoPro Session that works great and I have no doubt that a faceplant would knock it off, rather than damaging the structural integrity of the helmet.
 
I would say that a mount attached with double sided tape isn't rigidly mounted. A hole with a screw, yeah. But that sticky shit that GoPro uses, while it ain't easy to get off, is coming off in a crash.
 
I believe GoPro tape is rigid enough by law.

I've been riding with a helmet camera for almost a decade now. Pretty much never leave home without it and I'm also a motovlogger. I've never gotten harrased for my camera by law enforcement.

Now the AMA doesn't want me to have a helmet camera and some demo rides they don't allow it...
 
99.9% of LEOs don't even know this is a violation, if it even is. The odds of being cited for it are astronomically low as most LEOs aren't deep into motorcycle-specific laws. I'm one of the few motorcycle-specific experts at my office and didn't even know about this.

I know about minimum turn signal distances, mandatory rear red reflectors, vertically mounted license plates, DOT approval on all lighting, single mirror requirement (on either side), tinted windscreen legality, modified exhausts and CARB compliance, Power Commanders with illegal tunes....all the nuanced stuff that people like to modify on their bikes. If you have a plate that's legible and you're riding responsibly, most of it is ignored in favor of citing people riding recklessly.

I always ride with a camera mounted to my helmet.
 
My bike was supposed to come with a tinted screen from the factory, but came with clear on delivery. When I asked, they said that tinted screens aren't DOT approved and won't come into the country. Sure enough, the part number for a tinted screen is not listed in the US parts fiche, but is for every other country I checked.

It can't be tinted red or blue to avoid confusion with a LEO vehicle.
I used to think that law was rather nit-pickey until I was riding with a friend who had added a red tint screen. I found myself rolling out of the throttle every time I glanced in my mirror.
There is good reason for the law, IMO.

Ah, that make sense. I thought it meant like a smoked or dark tinted screen.
 
The windscreen mine was supposed to come with was a simple 'dark' tint, no coloring.

From an "import" or manufacturer level I'm sure it's a DOT thing. It's just easier to ship what is known legal everywhere. Less complications.
From an enforcement level I'm sure they are just weeding out the red and blue ones.
Fwiw, all of my bikes have aftermarket tinted screens. I have been pulled over countless times for speed. My tinted screens have never even been mentioned.
 
I get that, it didn't stop me from hunting down the correct screen from out of country and importing it. Clear just didn't look right.
