helmet issues

Thanks everyone.
I'd rather be safe than sorry and send it in for inspection. Would I find out info on the Shoei website? And does anyone know how long it's going to take?
My bike's in the shop right now, so being without my helmet won't be so bad.

Shoei will check helmet at no charge to you, except shipping (5-8 bucks USPS). I would ask the person who knocked it off to perhaps pay for that, but as far as a whole new helmet, probably not. Look to the interior to see any damage to the foam (though, w.o a head in there, it's highly improbable). I took a nice spill (say, 5 ft up on the bike, w/ my head in it) and Shoei said that it was cosmetic damage only. One thing to consider - perhaps get/make a little cubby. I got one at Yardbirds or something (just a 15 inch cube lamanent box) and lined it with a padding to keep from scratching it on the way in. Everyone teases me, but it's never been dropped. When/if you do send it back to Shoei be sure to wrap it so that it won't rub on the box and get scratched and be sure to put a note in the box asking them to re-pack it the same way. You might want to consider putting it in the helmet bag it came in. Also, when they test it they put it in some machine, because my full black helmet had little circular marks on it. I wasn't very happy with that, and if they helmet was brand new w/o cosmetic damage I would've opened up a can on them. GL.

EDIT: To get in contact w. shoei go to their website and send them an e-mail. They got back to me quickly with explicit directions. Turn-around was about a week after I shipped it.

Thanks Paroxysm for the info. I went to the Shoei website last night and didn't find any return or inspection instructions, but did see the "contact us".

I'm praying there isn't any damage. I don't think I can afford another helmet at the moment. There aren't any marks at all on the outside and as far as I could see the foam wasn't cracked inside.

like everyone else said...have it checked out...its the only thing protecting your grey matter if you ever have a fall. better safe then sorry. if i ever need to put my lid somewhere (like school) its always at my feet or the empty chair(the one you see in movies) next to me *never on top of a desk or somewhere it can be knocked down easily*

you've possibly long since found the info/had your helmet issues resolved, but for reference for future inquiring barfers:

this page on the shoei site had useful information about helmet repair/replacement (see bottom of page).
i sent this e-mail to shoei, and they responded within a day:

Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2007 09:08:14 -0800
From: "sshc@shoei.com" <sshc@shoei.com>
Subject: Re: submit helmet for check-up?

You can send in your helmet to the following address:

Att: Inspections
3002 Dow Ave Suite 128
Tustin, CA 92780

Once we have received your helmet there will be an inspection performed on the exterior fiber composite shell and the interior polystyrene
to see what condition the helmet is in. It may take up to three business days to inspect a helmet after which it will then be returned to you
via UPS ground (prepaid) along with paperwork detailing the findings of the inspection

Along with the helmet we will need a note with your name, return address, daytime phone number and briefly describe why you are sending
the helmet in.

Subject: submit helmet for check-up?

hello,
i would like to find out more information about how i can send in my helmet to have its integrity checked out (via x-rays?)?

according to this page:
http://www.shoei-helmets.com/road/rd_main.aspx in the 'helmet replacement' section at the bottom of page, i have satisfied condition #1 --
The helmet was subjected to an impact. i set the helmet on the seat of my motorcycle, from where it slid off and fell to the ground.

thank you

---

i think i must have dropped this one on the ground about a handful of times now (never learn? :p).

of course, you should probably check the site in case the e-mail changes, or the mailing address changes.

i'll be sending my rf-1000 helmet in soon, but a week without riding my bikey (no spare helmet)? i'm going to be sad :cry i'll also request getting the stop on the strap replaced.

Years ago a buddy of mine wanted to get rid of an old helmet. Because the brand name was the same as his POS cheating whore of a girlfriend"Nolan" , he wanted to have it go out with some aggression. we set it in my side yard and took at it with a pickax. Fully expecting the ax to easily split the shell ,he took a full overhead swing , only to watch the ax bounce off the shell, bearly marring the shell. We took multiple swings at it before giving up.
I think of this everytime I read about someone worried that a drop of the handlebars will destroy a helmet.
In this case a further drop than from the bars but still inconsequential in my book.

It's not the outside shell that's the issue, it's the foam shell inside the helmet. That is what absorbs the energy of an impact and keeps your brain intact, but only once. If you drop the helmet and it absorbs enough energy, or you have an accident where the helmet hits an object, it has done its "one-time use" job for which it was designed. To wear it again, hoping it will protect you is foolish, and negates the reason you bought it in the first place, to keep your brain from scrambling, or having your skull split open.

This is why you send it back to the factory to be examined after you drop it, to make sure it hasn't been compromised, and will still help save your life if you go down.
