A friend and Barfer, Marvin (Mandle) runs a barbecue pop up... Native Sons BBQ

Marvin cooks Texas style barbecue. No charcoal, no gas, no electricity; Only meat, salt and pepper, slow smoked with oak staves fed by hand, into an offset smoker.

It's a labor of love, 14 hours at a time, that few understand and fewer commit to.
Easily the best BBQ in San Francisco.

He's looking to expand his business, since he sells out as fast as he can slice brisket.

That means he needs a bigger BBQ pit.

Marvin plans on building a large offset smoker out of a converted 500 gallon propane tank. He's going to do the work himself, welding, fabrication, excetera, however he needs the shop space to do it in.

Is there a barfer that would be willing to let him use their warehouse or shop space to build his BBQ?
If you know of a space or someone willing to sell a big propane tank, referrals would also be greatly appreciated.

He would gladly cater your birthday, house party, or business meeting in return. ( a fair trade I assure you)
A number of you are familiar with his food, as he catered the 2015 "meat up" and also has pop up service at speakeasy and triple voodoo brewery in San Francisco.

For those of you unfamiliar, here are some pics of his food:

Now I am really hungry. :drool

Dug his food at the meat up. Hope all works out for him.

How interesting. I work at a welding shop for my new gig. Let me ask the boss man and get back to you. :)

We have an OLD 500 gallon tank that will need some love but he can have. I'll have to check with the property owner to double check if he wants to let it go.

He can make payment in form of brisket and beef ribs

I'll let him answer these questions but I'm sure he's interested

I'll have to double check size I'm almost positive it's 500 though, but it has the right 'patina' for being converted to a BBQ, it was my pipe dream but I don't have the time or abilty and would rather see someone else put it to use. Feel free to PM me a phone number and I can text pictures of it

How long does he need space for and can he travel?

Propane tank would have to be hacked open outside before I'd let him inside to work on it-I won't risk my shop going boom.

Not sure how long it would take to get it built. Depends on availability of equipment and whatever else. No longer than a month i suppose. I can travel.

Yes the tank would have to be rendered safe before hacking into it. My idea for that would be to take it to a nearby body of water, pump water into it to displace any propane and then pump it back out.

What equipment do you think you need?

I've almost scored a couple of these for Marvin, but folks flaked. Minimum would be a plasma cutter and Mig welder to get it cranked out.

Speaking with a propane provider, they said be aware that some of the dried material inside of the tank may be flammable so be extrememly careful making the first cuts. When I had a sump put in my elco fuel tank we triple washed the thing out and ran a pipe from the exhaust of my tractor into the thing to purge out as much O2 as possible.

We don't need Marvin looking like one of his awsome briskets!

I've got a mig-I sold the plasma cutter. I preferred using a cutoff wheel for all my metal work.

Clean the tank out as well as you can, then put dry ice in it and give it some time to purge out all the air. It won't blow up.

And you really don't need a plasma cutter. A cutting torch, or even a Sawzall with the right blade will do a perfectly good job.

My boss says yes. I work at SF Metalworks right here in the City. He LOVES BBQ. Please send me a PM. He is quite intrigued by your project. Oh, and we're half a block off the bay so there's water nearby. :cool

Good going, TWT! :party

Good luck, Marvin! Looking forward to attending more popups!
