i was removing the bolt that holds frame slider in place...it snapped off...leaving the other broken half stuck in place.
and no; none of it is sticking out. in fact what is left of it is buried about 3/4" inside the hole.
very very frustrating.
how can i get it out without ruining the threading???????????
thanks in advance!

A number of manufacturers make screw extractors ("Screw-Out," "Easy-Out," etc). Essentially, you drill a hole in the center of what's left of the bolt, then use the left-handed drill bit of the correct size to drill the broken bolt out. Read "Screw Extractor" here for a more detailed explanation.

+1 on the screw extractor. You should be able to pick one up pretty easily somewhere that has a half-decent tool selection. Where in the North Bay are you? I'm in Vacaville but work in Walnut Creek tomorrow and have a set of extractors, and a tap-and-die set if worse comes to worse. PM me if you you want to make some sort of arrangements.

Ive helped several people on this board remove broken bolt's from their bike's. if you need help send me a pm. im in concord and will be home all day tommarow:thumbup

thanks

to everyone who who responded...
i sent a major shout out to you!!!!!!!
I especially want to thank those who offered thier time and services to help me. i unfortunatly live too far from you guys.
just knowing i can go buy a tool to take care of this problem is a great help.
thanks guys!!!!!!!
BARF fuckin' rocks!!:thumbup
now i can take care of this and go:ride

if buying an extractor, make sure and get a quality piece, and take your time with it.
i had a crappy one and it snapped inside the drilled hole. theyre made out of hardened steel, so its tough to get that out.

it also helps ALOT AND I MEAN A LOT if you get a center punch and punch where you want to drill 1st

+1 on the punching to get an intial bite. Trust me though, get a "good" set of easy outs, i.e. snap on. Yes they run a little extra, but they don't skip and they bite to get the item out. I have used them for years and have never failed. Good luck:thumbup

Excellent-maybe even priceless-advice. I'll be sure not to buy the cheapo bargain bin version. I say 'maybe priceless' cause when things dont work out it can be monstrously frustrating.
thanks!

Would shooting some penetrating oil in first help?

+1

also some heat,

+1 to the center punch

and use a left hand drill bit (sometimes you get lucky)

many different types of easy-outs, the only one's I've ever had break are the ones that look like drill only tapered.

Also....

You may find a mobile "broken tap removal" service in the yellow pages...like this guy:

+1 on the left hand drill bit, you may want to heat it up really well also, and the penetrating oil... I use the extractors as a last resort.....

You could find it at either place... It is just a super light weight oil in a spray can with some additives that help break down metal corrosion, Starrett M1 is my favorite(hard to find), Tri-Flow in a spray can a close second(more common, available at bicycle and good hardware stores)...

you dont really need to buy the expensive ones (snap on) if you dont use them all time. i broke off 4 bolts in a bad crash last yr, 1 in the swing arm, 1 in the frame and 2 far the crankcase cover. i got the bits at OSH, start small and work your way bigger and bigger. and drill the hole 1st, dont try and attack it right away with a left hand bit. slow speed and moderate pressure and youll get them out no problem. i got all 4 of mine out when i took my time, when i was getting frustrated i tried using a bigger bit to start and it was all over the place and i ended up wasting more time

+1 on the center punch
It may help if you can get to the backside of the bolt, if you can, then you can use a normal right handed drill bit to try and drill it out, sometimes the bit will catch an a bur in the hole and turn the bolt. extractors wont work from this side though

i have the same issue. stuck broken bolt in the swingarm. i got the alden drill-out [micro grabit] 4mm (since my swingarm spool mount is 6mm). have been trying to use it for the past 1 hour very slowly turning the drill in the reverse side (anti-clockwise). i dont see any itentions of the drill-out bit making a hole on the bolt. any suggestions please?

ive broken more craftsman extractors then i care to count, I use the harbor frieght extractors now and have yet to have one break, another trick to use is not to use a drill, thats the reason people break extractors. use some vice grips or a cresent wrench on the end of the extractor, heat up the metal around the bolt and go slow instead of trying to torque the thing out quick:thumbup
