Help me figure out what dirtbike to buy

i think your best bet is a HOnda CRF250/450X. You can find some street legal conversions of theses out there from 2002. The nice things about the Hondas CRF 250/450 X/R is that many parts are interchangeable between all 4 models and didn't change much between 2002 and 2007. I race a 2005 450R supermoto that used to be my dirtbike.. I race it with AMF on the big tracks as well as the supermoto tracks. I also have a 2005 CRF450X that is a blast to ride. It has electric start and is a powermanchine! All the gear needed to make it a supermoto would be the same for all 4 models. Parts are super easy and cheap to find too. I just upgraded to the 450X from a 250X. The 250X is a might nice bike.. Basically the same thing with a smaller engine..

Let me know if you want some more info on the Hondas.

Screw the SM for now and buy a nice dirt bike. And seriously don't get an XR200, seriously

For maybe $600-$800, he could get his initial crashing out of the way on an old XR200. And never have to work on it. Anyway, I didn't know his budget when I suggested that.

Fwiw I rode a 2t years ago and hated it. Was planning on getting a 250 4t as a first dirt bike this summer and I test rode a 300 2t. Wow, fell in love. Big torque big power, still light, easy to ride fast or slow, does singletrack well and also eats hill climbs. There's a reason so many guys ride them in extreme enduros

So glad I didn't get that 250 4t

Yeah for 600, not 2k like he said above, that's crazy money for an xr :loco

But I don't think you can get a green sticker for a 2 stroke, only the red sticker, true?

Correct but riding in red sticker season is meh anyway, and Stony is open so that's all that matters

But you could still get a pre '02 if it was that important

I have a plated xr650r that is a fucking beast!!! But I've been riding dirt my whole life. On that note I also just picked up a pretty sweet ktm 300 exc last weekend. Love the 2t power and ligh as a feather after running the 650 on single track. The ktm EXC's, kawi KDX's, Suzuki RMX's all have a smoother, more offroad/trail friendly power delivery than their MX based cousins.

Cow mountain has no redsticker restrictions. You can ride red all year round.

Wait until you get the hang of things and are waiting for the first rain of the year to go riding. Nothing better than new tires, the first rain, no dust and good traction .

Kegan, you are welcome to ride my 250 2-stroke. I've got 17s and dirt wheels for it, so you can try it out in either format (or both). :thumbup

A WR250F for me after a lot of reading for a 4-stroke with both electric and kick start. A KDX200, being older, cheaper, even simpler, is also very attractive.

dude, there is a barfer with a KTM 300 for cheap.
Do not walk, run and buy that.

Everone needs to get some seat time to figure out their needs. Few have the oportunity to get it so cheap.

I would move this to dirtybarfing if I was not so lame.
Or rather, if you guys did not need to understand how important it is to know how to ride a dirtbike.

Get one now. Ride it and you will understand.

What he said.

Kegan, I can help you work on that 300 if you get it.

A DRZ would do the job pretty nicely. Coming from heavier bikes it feels awesome and like a great on/offroad machine. Just don't ever ride a real dirtbike otherwise you won't want to go back.

Now, I'm not trying to burn down someone's sale of their bike, I haven't seen it. But I highly suggest, that although a KTM 300 is a really good bike, that a newbie rider should really take a look at parts prices for the bike they are going to buy. A bike that is, at that price, I'd say, mid-90s, correct (?), it's going to need work, probably sooner than later. and in my experience, KTM prices, especially older ones, which I've owned, are extremely high.

Here, I just looked up, for example a 96 KTM 300. Cylinder is over $1000, almost $1100. For a $750 bike? A piston is about $200. It is a fairly easy assumption that an 18 year old bike is going to need a cylinder and piston at some point. So with gaskets and everything, you're looking at almost twice what the bike originally cost, and its still going to be worth $750.

I'm just trying to help the OP to not get a cheap bike, to only have to put twice what it originally cost him, to make or keep it running.

Once again, I haven't seen the bike in question, I'm not trying to burn it down, who knows, it might be like new. I'm just suggesting that the OP be careful, we don't want him getting a real bad taste in his mouth with his first dirt bike.

Whatever you wind up getting, before you buy it, just imagine how many little plastic geegaws are going to break off when it hits the ground. Don't pay extra for more geegaws. And then after you buy it just go ahead and kick it over on both sides, or throw it out of the truck, and pick up all the junk that broke off and throw it in the trash.

WR250 if you're set on four stroke

You won't want to ride a DRZ on single track. You can and it will be fine, others can do it with ease, but it is certainly not light and flickable compared to a 2stroke 125 or 250

You'd be better off getting a cheap ($1500) green sticker 2t 125 or 250 and a cheap 150 4t supermoto. Trying to do both wont be easy unless you get like a crf250 or wr250

I vote for:

Dirt: 2002 or older CR125/250r...preferably 125

Supermoto: CRF150RSM

The supermoto is like a little play bike you can tuck into a corner somewhere...

What corndog said!!
