Help me pick my next gun : Bolt action rifle, or handgun in .40 or .45

My fellow gun lovers : What brand/model/caliber would you recommend for a bolt action rifle, as far as handguns go would you choose a .40 and a .45? Why and what brand?

I live in a state that doesn't have strong gun laws so most guns not legal in CA are legal here (Arkansas) so don't let that stop you giving me a good choice.

I love guns, and I'm going to add to my collection. I have a carry concealed permit to carry which I usually carry my .380 around or my 9mm if I'm in a area I don't know well.

A .40 or .45 would most likely be used mostly for home defense (better then the 9mm), shooting (although less then the 9mm) and also kept in the car during traveling to new areas.

A rifle would be used for fun, just at the range. No plans to hunt yet, maybe in the future but I'm not basing my choice on that.

I currently have:

Stag Arms AR15
9MM XD sub-compact (I LOVE, LOVE this brand. Great gun)
Ruger 9MM
380 TCP Taurus
.12 HD Remington shotgun

That gives you a list of what I got so you can recommend, I would prefer a different brand other then XD but I've heard from buddies that quality on S&W and similar have gone down. I want a reliable gun and if it's a handgun I don't want it to be huge, but it doesn't have to be compact as I most likely won't be carrying it on me. Although if there is a good compact .40 or .45 please give me your opinion.

Thanks fellow gun collectors!!

Saiga-12. A shotgun with an AK action. Not on your list, but look into it anyhow, particularly as it's legal where you are, but not here. :laughing My dream gun.

Have you considered lever action? You can get 357 or 45 so a new pistol will shoot the same ammo. I have several and love them.

Glock 23 for the pistol. You can use it for ccw if you want and still packs a pop.

As for the rifle, that's a tricky one. If you are just target shooting, look at one of the Remington varmint rifles in .223, very accurate and not too expensive. If you want something for hunting I love my Kimber. Light and accurate and a great stock trigger. If you're on a budget the new Ruger Americans seem to be a very good value. Or just get a Mosin from Big 5 and tickle your shoulder a bit. ;)

Bolt action: Remington 700 in the caliber of your choice.
Pistol: I'm partial to 1911's. You should be too :p

I have an XD-45 by Springfield. Think of it as a Glock chambered in God's favorite caliber.

too expensive to shoot for fun tho for me. It'll probably be sold in a month or two after I run one last box thru it.

Speaking of God, He shoots a Remington 700, carries a GLOCK 23, and drives a Chevy.

Remington is nice, I use them, but bang for the buck - check out CZ.

They make one called the 527 that shoots the 7.62x39 like a laser! Great bolt gun for up to 200 yards effective range.

.260 is a heck of a caliber too, but often overlooked. They take a .308 case, neck it down to .264/6.5mm and you have a super long range rifle with low recoil.

As to the .40 vs. .45, I fall on the side of there's no replacement for displacement. Go for a 1911 in .45 and be done with it. Big old mortar balls at moderate speed will do the business and won't tend to penetrate walls like higher velocity rounds.

The .40 was developed from the 10mm with an eye to mimic the .45 in stopping power by trading mass for velocity. Why not have that which has been mimiced - the original, the .45?

CZ also makes a nice DA/SA in .45, so if the 1911 isn't your cuppa, look at one of those.

Here's my 1911, it's a Dan Wesson Classic Bobtail commander.

And don't forget...

Can't go wrong with a Remington 700 SPS in .260 or .308.

Glock 30SF is a great sub-compact .45 that you can shoot and carry concealed. It's a double stack so you get 10 rounds of .45 ACP, but it'll accept any .45 caliber glock mags so you can easily have a couple 14 rounders for backup. It's also relatively cheap, and you won't have to worry about whatever LEO chucklefuck armorer wants to fingerbang it if you ever have to use it. Goes bang every time with minimal cleaning. (disclaimer - you live in Arkansas. We live in CA. I don't know about how local police procedures differ down there, but here it's 100% guaranteed if you ever have to shoot someone your firearm will be taken for evidence. It may take some time to get it back, it may not, but either way they're taking it from you. There's a thread on Calguns about a guy who had a $2k Ed Brown or something taken by LEOs and it took him several months to get it back).

I wouldn't get a .40 personally. Too much of a compromise round in my opinion. I either want to shoot something a lot, ie 9mm, or have a bigger round with more stopping power, ie .45. Can't remember where this phrase originated, but...

I can't guarantee a 9mm hollowpoint will expand every time. I CAN guarantee a .45 won't shrink.

Personally, I think it just depends on having the right holster for the most part. I've carried everything from a full size Kimber TLE II to a Glock 26. Both fit well and are fairly easy to conceal with a Crossbreed Supertuck.

It's awesome. Not as easy to load or to work up a load as .308, though. I neck down 7mm-08, and some people neck up .243. If you neck down from .308, you need a 7mm-08 die as an intermediate; you can't/shouldn't do it in one step.

Hmmmm you just reminded me. I have a bunch of .308 brass sitting around from the last range trip...anyone loading .308s or anything who wants it/can use it shoot me a PM.
